Most people are just entering the workforce at the age of 21. They are graduating from college, moving out of mom and dad’s, and beginning to get their feet wet in “the real world”, and they make plenty of mistakes. While he doesn’t have it all figured out just yet, Chicago’s Rockie Fresh is already three years deep in a successful music career. He is an interesting position of being a young veteran, and for Chicago’s exploding young rap scene, Rockie is an OG amongst the youngins.
With all eyes on Chicago Hip Hop right now, artists from the windy city are signing deals at a pace not seen in a very long time. Rockie Fresh’s name is at the top of “soon to be signed list,” with labels such as Columbia, Maybach Music Group, and Bad Boy, rumored to be showing interest. While Rockie won’t say who exactly has been in his ear, he does acknowledge the interest and says a deal could come as early as this week. This is where Rockie’s years of experience come in extra handy. He and his team have been building something special, and are in no rush to ink a deal that doesn’t fit. “With all things that we built, I’m pursuing each situation with caution,” he told me via phone shortly after coming back to Chicago from New York, and just before leaving again to hit L.A.
In this interview, Rockie talks about an impending record deal, the Chicago Hip Hop scene, and explains how his next mixtape is going to top Driving 88. Hit the next page to check it out.
