Jamila Woods Shares New Single “Baldwin” With Lyric Video

Jamila Woods just released the latest song from her forthcoming LEGACY! LEGACY! LP coming this Friday May 10th via Jagjaguwar in partnership with Closed Sessions. Nico Segal (of Social Experimen/Intellexual) lends his trumpet, which for me instantly lets you know that this is a Chicago song, and the conversation that Jamila is having on this project is one that is echoing across the windy city. According to Woods: “Baldwin is a song inspired by the work of James Baldwin, particularly the “Letter to My Nephew” in his book The Fire Next Time. He had an incredible ability to speak about whiteness in a way that was hard-hitting and nuanced, and delivered some of the most elegant reads to white America, providing me a lens to think about how I see whiteness at work in my world today.”

The track comes complete with a lyric video that is beautiful in its simplicity while still carrying the weight of the topic she’s singing about. In fact the emphasis on the hand written lyrics is a nice reference to the writer James Baldwin.  Check it out below.
