Space Jam was a cinematic achievement of the highest regard. The combination of the mid-’90s powerhouses of Bugs Bunny and the GOAT Michael Jordan was a force to be reckoned with. 17 years later, Space Jam is still viewed with respect, whether it’s ironically over the film’s acting, or seriously in regards to the cherished childhood memories it left us (as well as the amazing soundtrack). No athlete has achieved the same level of mainstream popularity that Jordan attained during the ’90s. However, some have come close in their own attempts to make that transition to the big screen (re: Kevin Durant in Thunderstruck).

Kevin Hart, a popular actor/comedian known for his small stature and big laughs in films like Death at a Funeral and next year’s Ride Along, has been announced to co-star and write LeBron James’ feature film debut, Ballers. Originally, the Miami Heat star was attached to a 2009 film, Fantasy Basketball Camp about a basketball superstar’s brother finding his own stardom in a fantasy basketball league. However, with Hart’s involvement, the premise might be altered to fit his writing style.

Space Jam, this is not… In fact, I have no real expectations for this film other than it being a guaranteed box office bomb. Still, I’m open to a surprise. I’m not a big fan of Hart’s, but I know he’s been able to find success from both his stand-up specials and in his film roles, so an audience is there for him to tap. James, too, will have his devotees driving to the theater.

Ballers won’t enter production until after the NBA season, so the earliest it’ll hit theaters is by early 2015.
