Ever since Quentin Tarantino‘s revenge epic Kill Bill was split into two films over a decade ago, fans have been clamoring for the mythical Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair, Tarantino’s vision that united both Kill Bill volumes into one with extended sequences and never-before-seen footage. However, as much as Tarantino has talked up a potential release, whether in a limited theatrical release or on an extended blu-ray release, nothing has materialized. Three years ago, the full cut screened in Los Angeles’ New Beverly cinema, but no larger release followed.

With San Diego Comic Con taking place last weekend, Tarantino was on hand to answer questions from devoted fans. As always, the prospect of The Whole Bloody Affair came up during the Q&A… this time, with a very interesting and informative answer from the famed director:

What’s going on with that is originally back when Kill Bill was going to be one movie, I wrote an even longer anime sequence. So you see in the movie [O-Ren] kill her boss but then there was that long hair guy… The big sequence was her fighting that guy. I.G. [The Japanese Anime Studio] who did Ghost in the Shell said we can’t do that and finish it in time for your thing. And [plus] you can’t have a thirty-minute piece in your movie. I said okay. It was my favorite part but it was the part you could drop. So we dropped it and then later when I.G. heard we were talking about doing Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair — they still had the script so without even being commissioned, they just did it and paid for it themselves. It’s really terrific. Anyway, The Weinstein Company and myself were talking about actually coming out with it sometime, not before the year is out, but within the next year with limited theatrical engagement as well.

It appears that The Whole Bloody Affair will eventually find its way to theaters sometime next year, hopefully followed up with a proper blu-ray release. With movement on this and Tarantino’s next film confirmed to be The Hateful Eight, let alone the Django/Zorro comic crossover, we’re going to be seeing a lot from Tarantino over the next couple of years.
