Last week saw the release of “Theme Music”, the first official single from Closed Sessions: ATX, and on a bigger note, the first commercial release of anything from our Closed Sessions label. The song is titled “Theme Music” because of the way that it hits so many of our objectives with this album. Objective one, gather together some of most talented artists in Hip Hop, both up and coming as well as established. The track succeeds by pairing former XXL Freshman Fashawn with Athletic Mic League’s Buff1, and Chicago’s rising emcee Scheme. Each artist is accomplished and acclaimed in their own right, with their best days still yet to come. On the production side is DJ Babu, a man that needs no introduction in Hip Hop circles as he has gained respect and fame through his turntablism innovations as part of the Beat Junkies as well as his production and live shows with Dilated Peoples.
Our second objective with the album was to create some really good music, music that would connect with listeners and stand up for years to come. I feel “Theme Music” does that as well with each emcee contributing memorable lines, as well as addressing the specialness of a cross-country posse cut recorded in the Lone Star state. The song was recorded on Friday, the same day as “The Roadhouse”, and possibly the busiest day at the mansion. Naledge set things off by recording an early morning session in his pajamas, where he was joined by GLC. Shortly after Fashawn showed up, follow by DJ Babu, Rhettmatic, Buff1, Rakaa of Dilated Peoples, and a heavy number of visitors including Tabi Bonney, Rockie Fresh, members of Mac Miller’s Most Dope camp, Rhymefest, CurT@!N$, Emilio Rojas, and many more.
I love this song because of its energy, all the artists that worked together to record it, and the way it captures the full four day project. While this song started in the early afternoon, it was also the final track completed that night with Babu, Fashawn, and Rakaa returning to the house around 3AM to put finishing touches on the chorus. It is the “Theme Music” indeed, and I will always remember the work that took place during Austin, as well as the good vibes throughout.
