After a week off, Local Sounds is back with some new features as we quickly march into the heart of October. While new music wasn’t necessarily the theme this week in the ‘Go, we have fresh content from the likes of Common, Kanye West, 10ille, Sir Michael Rocks, Thelonious, and a special look at the rising 2008ighties Crew, serving as our first Top 5 special on Local Sounds.

Common – Recently sat down with HardKnockTV, and spoke on the organic nature of the sessions he had with No I.D. for the upcoming LP, stating he didn’t need any other producers for the project  because No’s vision was beyond fitting. He also talks about his relationship to G.O.O.D. Music, Nas.Com, his hopeful collaborative project with Nas and much more. We also saw some still from the “Blue Sky” video shoot. The Dreamer, The Believer 11.22.11

Kanye West – While Yeezy is coming down from his Dw showcase in Paris, and gearing up for the behemoth Watch The Throne tour that is to come, he hit the streets with Russell Simmons, in support of #OccupyWallStreet. By staying silent, West’s presence was clearly more powerful than a “Free-Speech” spirited Kanye in say 2005.

Top 5Songs from 2008ighties Crew (So Far…)

And I say ‘so far’ because it has only about a month now that I’ve been hip to these cats. RTC said it best earlier in the week stating “The 2008ighties crew is deep.  Just when I think I know’em all, they send something over from another one of their homies that miraculously raps, produces, engineers, builds cars, sells insurance, and flies hot air balloons.” That has sort of been the case for me, as it seems everyday I learn about a new member, or old mixtape from these cats. The fact is the team is deep, and they have something many other “groups” or “crews” lack, which is a variance in style. While its obvious they are like-minded individuals, You do not hear the same song on each members project. This week, I compiled my Top 5 tracks (no order) from the 2008ighties crew – which will most likely change in the next week. Listen below for a bevy of material from our cities newest crop.

Top 5:

Fonz-E Mak: “And Then They Played It…”

U.G. x Fonz-E Mak: “Public Enemies”

Johnny St. Cloud “The Names Johnny”

Legit: “Seeing Is Believing”

Julian Malone: “2Deep”

Honorary Mention – Calez: “Middle Finger”(just hit 10k on Youtube!)

Sir Michael Rocks – Coming off a strong release with Premier Politics, and the visuals for “I’m Doggin”, Mikey did not slow down at all this week, shooting videos for the Cardo produced “Wassup” and the LP’s biggest track “Too Short Back”. Be on the lookout much more from Mikey and the Toothpickclique, word to Tris J, 10ille, Shorty K, and Boldy James.  Sir Michael Rocks also hit the studio with Mac Miller and Casey Veggies while Mac was in town for his show at the House of Blues.

10ille – While I was surprised we didn’t find 10ille on Sir Michael Rocks’ debut LP Premier Politics, it is only right the New York native hit us this week with her most recent project titled Bronx Zoo. The tape features 13 new songs with production from Chuck Inglish, Michael Uzowuru, Hannibal King, Tye Hill, Like of Pac Div, Brandun Deshay, and more.

Thelonious – Mr. Thelonious has been thoroughly on his grind since he go to Chicago in August and this week he brings us an organically filmed video documenting him making a beat. Concluding with a fine finished product, giving a Jay-Z Blueprint vibe, I can only wait to hear what Thelonious has cooked up with people like Boldy James, Rockie Fresh, and The Kid Daytona.

With another solid output from local artists in the 2nd week of October, everyone’s eyes are looking towards Halloween waiting for high-profile releases from Freddie Gibbs (Cold Day In Hell) and LEP Bogus Boys (Now Or Neva). As we all wait for them, chill out and digest some newness from our featured 2008ighties crew, and jump on the bandwagon before its too late.
