Astonish

Here we are. September is here, football season has kicked off as we enter another Fall season that is sure to excite. This week kicked off with the 2nd annual North Coast Music Festival, which ended in another successful year in Union Park. This week we have a full plate of news and music from artists like Lupe Fiasco, YP, Common, Project Mayhem, Sir Michael Rocks, MC ADaD, SC, Vic Mensa, Robot Army, Lungz, theWHOevers, Show You Suck, Astonish + More.

Last week week Lupe performed at UIC for a show along with The Cool Kids, and during his set he made a couple outlandish remarks regarding the big wigs in today’s game, and essentially claiming he is the best. “When you’re done Watching The Throne, turn around and watch me, when you’re done with the Carter 4 come back to me for more, when you’re done with that Drake, no, I ain’t trying to hate but I’m back up on my grind and I’m about to skaaaaate on these ni**as!…Put it on your blog and your tumblrs on your twitters that Lupe said that he’s the best, NI**A.”

If this statement was made 3 years ago when Lupe had zero questionable material out, or even right after he dropped Enemy of The State, I would side with Lu no questions asked. Yet, when you are calling out Jay and Kanye after they released WTT and you released Lasers… I can’t quite back that up. Either way Lupe is one of the top lyricists in the game and Food & Liquor 2 will remind people of that.

Sir Michael Rocks has continued to twease (tease on twitter lol) about his upcoming projects those being Premier Politics Vol. 1 & 2 as well as a collab project with Boldy James titled Rocks & Blocks. This week Mikey noted again that Premier Politics will drop before Rocks & Blocks, but no word yet on if both volumes will be released together.

Chicago is in for a gigantic Tuesday as two rising emcees YP & Lungz are releasing their projects Still Awake and Dreamkillaz on the 13th. Both projects will be wild in their own manner, cementing Tuesday as a night to sit down roll up and listen to two of the illest new Chicago MC’s.

On Friday night, Common hit the stage at North Coast Festival to perform a slew of tracks from Be & Finding Forever. While all in attendance surely wanted to hear new material from The Dreamer, The Believer no one can complain about a Common performance giving the professional cadence he brings to every show.

New Music & Videos

Project Mayhem released their track “Boss” which is off their upcoming just released mixtape Industry Night hosted by Sean Mac. Mac also released his mixtape Luxury Trap Music this week featuring the best of the club bangers as well as local exclusives straight for the best city in the world.

After what seems like a hiatus too long for Dr. Dre, G.O.D. Jewels is here with some newness Everything I Touch as well as visuals for the track B****, I Swear To God. Look for a lot more for G.O.D in the coming weeks.

MC ADaD is here with more material featuring Exile production, in the form of visuals for “The Time”. Everytime I hear more ADaD x Exile I envision a full project between the two. Someone needs to make this happen.

Producer SC cliqued up with KTD’s Vic Mensa for Blow My Mindoff the Good Doctors – The Duff Project. Another dope offering from Vic who I believe will indeed keep improving until he is one of the best emcee’s in the city. Peep the Naledge x Young Wonder cameos. Robot Army is back again as they prepare for their Sept. 25th release Summer Shots. This week they hit us with “Kill a Nigga Culture“, another quality release from the crew, featuring a very dope use of different voice-overs from the recent London riots.

Lungz has been prepping for Tuesday’s release date for a while now, and earlier this week he let go the final leak “In For The Ride” off the Don Cannon hosted Dreamkillaz project. Dreamkillaz features Sir Michael Rocks, Joe Buddens, Fred The Godson + More.

Astonish hit us with the new single for his upcoming LP, “Shine Like Dilla/Trees” where he comes in on a new note showcasing his vocal range on the hook, and keeping it classic on the verses.

Always fresh is more music from Show You Suck. This week we got Red Cup Salute from the MC also known as Show Your So Awesome. Swag. “You’re way to drunk to have those car keys.” New comer Fonz-E Mak hit us with “Storm Before The Calm” a very solid track from the 2008ightes crew. Lookout for more from Fonz, Calez and the crew as they will be turning heads sooner than later.

Another solid week in the local scene as we departed from If you’d like to contribute something to Local Sounds, just hit us up on Twitter, Facebook, or send an email to seanck@rubyhornet.com
