In absolutely no news to anybody, Blockbuster Video stores are finally closing for good. The 300 remaining stores will be shuttered by early next year. Going down with the brick and mortar stores will also be Blockbuster’s mail DVD distribution. The Blockbuster name, however, will continue on as a part of the DISH Network’s corporation via the Blockbuster @ Home streaming and the Blockbuster On Demand services.

The Blockbuster store closures represent the end of of a long-lasting death. With the rise in popularity of both Netflix’s DVD-by-mail service and Netflix Instant streaming, the writing was on the wall for Blockbuster’s closure when the first stores were closed in 2011. It’s a bit sad, but technology will always win, especially in the entertainment and retail industries. We all can hold onto our memories of renting movies and games at Blockbuster growing up for now.
