Riot Fest Chicago is Moving to Douglas Park

The dust has settled and the official verdict is in: Riot Fest is saying goodbye to Humboldt Park and hello to Douglas Park.

Mike Petryshyn, co-founder of the recently named Best Music Festival in the US, released a statement about the festival's move to North Lawndale:

In my very first meeting with Alderman Cardenas, I was happy that we were discussing logistical details and how we could enrich the community. Quite frankly, I was silently ecstatic. He gets it and it was genuine. Our goal has always been to leave a positive impact in the community we call home by helping local independent businesses, hiring ward residents and making an impact year-round. We did that in our previous home and plan to do the same — if not more — in the community surrounding Douglas Park and the 12th Ward.

As soon as we started discussing community, it was refreshing to see George get up from his desk and start pointing on the ward map to the local businesses we need to meet and have a formal introduction.  He was excited and so was I.  To have an an elected official see clearly how we can bring good things is humbling. To be appreciated for who we are—as people running an indie company and a festival—by the him and all of the supporters has been inspiring.

The strife between Riot Fest organizers and Alderman Maldonado of the 26th Ward (where Humboldt Park is located) has been well-noted since last year's festival that left the park with thousands of dollars in damages. And while the festival is committed to repairing the park, Maldonado and other Humboldt Park residents were vocal with their opposition to the festival's return despite overwhelming support that resulted in over 8,000 signatures (ours included) to keep the festival in Humboldt.

Riot Fest also announced the lineup for this year's festival will be released next week, ensuring a busy Riot Fest-related news month ends on a high note.

North Coast Music Festival (NCMF) is thrilled to announce WIDESPREAD PANIC as the surprise headliner for this year’s festival! The legendary Southern rock jam band has remained in Pollstar’s Top 50 Tours of the Year for the past decade, and continues to be one of the most relevant touring entities on the live music scene after almost 30 years. 2015 marks a special year for the band as they announced the release of their first studio album in five years. This spring WP embarks on a highly anticipated nationwide tour in celebration of their first studio release since Dirty Side Down in 2010.

Top Artists to See at North Coast Music Festival 2014

NCMF2014

Preview written by Alex Lapenia and Jesse Pizano of Three Card Photography. Post was originally published by our affiliates at Chicago Music.

Summer is coming to an end on Labor Day weekend, and with that comes the end of summer’s official music festival season. I’d like to share a few reasons why you should join the thousands of people who will descend upon Union Park located in Chicago for the fifth anniversary celebration of North Coast Music Festival, summer’s official last stand. Whether you are into hip hop, dance music, or electronica, North Coast has music for everyone to enjoy. With Bassnectar as heavy bass hitters, Snoop Dogg and Kid Cudi bringing hip hop vibes, and STS9 as one of the headliners, the lineup of artist features an impressive spread of acts, with a wide variety of DJs and producers including Zeds Dead, electro soul GRiZ, dub-step sensation Adventure Club, and house’s finest talent Dada Life, Wolfgang Gartner, Showtek, and W&W. There will be some amazing indie bands Little Dragon, Future Island, Wild Belle, and Dr. Dog, as well as more hip hop sounds from Riff Raff, Action Bronson and Chicago locals Probcause and Sabu. Some acts I am most excited for are EDM headliners Alesso and Nikky Romero who are sure to be hot. With 50 more acts over the three-day festival, this without a doubt is going to be the most fun weekend of the summer. See you at North Coast! Read on as we go into more detail about who we're excited to see at NCMF this weekend.

New Location, Attractions for Riot Fest Chicago 2014

If you couldn't already tell, I'm extremely excited about Riot Fest's 10th anniversary. It's been less than a month since the punk rock-themed festival released their lineups for the year, and now we're supplied with even bigger, more exciting news. Riot Fest will be moving its location from Humboldt Park to... Humboldt Park! The festival will simply migrate to the north end of the park with North Ave. serving as its Northern end, Kedzie to its West, California to its East, and Division to the South. This will make access to the festival much more convenient for commuters as the North Ave. bus will now be accessible right on festival grounds.

Even better, more attractions are being added to the festival this year. In addition to the staple carnival attractions that Riot Fest has been known for, a 9-hole miniature golf course (supplied by our homie Artpentry), a haunted house, Gospel for the Guilty burlesque show, a 20-game arcade supplied by Emporium Arcade Bar (with proceeds going to the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless), and more!

Haunted house and miniature golf tickets are on sale right now over at Ticketfly. Take a closer look at the updated map for Riot Fest Chicago 2014 below. We'll see you next month!

Austin City Limits 2014 Night Shows

Night Shows for Austin City Limits 2014 Announced

Following the Austin City Limits 2014 lineup announcement comes the announcement for the Texas-based festival's "night shows." Are you a fan of some of this year's ACL artists, but would better appreciate seeing them in an intimate venue setting rather than an outdoor festival? ACL's night shows just might be for you. Tickets for shows artists such as DIPLO, Spanish Gold, Tegan and Sara, Interpol, CHVRCHES, The Glitch Mob, and more officially go on sale this Friday at 10am CST. You can find the full list of Austin City Limits 2014 night shows here.

However, if you subscribe to the official C3Concerts.com mailing list by 10pm CST tonight, you'll be mailed a pre-sale code to purchase tickets a day early on Thursday. To join the aforementioned mailing list, simply sign up at this link. We'll have more from this year's Austin City Limits when the festival touches down in October!

Midwest Ska Fest 2014

Midwest Ska Fest 2014 Information + Sampler

You know what I love? Well thought-out DIY musical ventures, and that is exactly what Midwest Ska Fest 2014 is. Operating in its second year (though formerly known as Summer Ska Fest last year), the festival is an appreciation of independent ska, reggae, 2-tone, and dub bands and artists throughout the Midwest and will be taking place at the Double Door on Saturday, August 23rd. Tickets are on sale here.

This year's lineup features Chicago bands The Crombies, On Your Marx, Los Vicios de Papa, and Malafacha alongside Ohama's The Bishops, Milwaukee's Something to Do, and Northwest Indiana's Green Room Rockers with special guest Matt Wixson and a DJ set by legendary ska DJ, Chuck Wren. To help commemorate the festival, a Midwest Ska Fest 2014 Sampler has been created to help familiarize potential attendees with the bands' music. You can find the sampler below.

We'll be attending Midwest Ska Fest 2014, so you can expect more from these bands full of "hep" cats, hephephephep. Ska puns!

Lollapalooza

Ruby Hornet's Lollapalooza 2014 Spotify Playlist

In case you missed our Lollapalooza artist recommendations yesterday, check them out while you listen to our Spotify Playlist! Curated by both Aleks and I, we wanted to share this playlist with those who may not be familiar with the Lollapalooza artists we recommended. In my opinion, the playlist runs the gamut of sounds that Lollapalooza offers, from OutKast's flow to CHVRCHES' synth-pop and everything in between. Enjoy this playlist while you prepare for a very tiring and people-filled weekend.
