[Through My Lens] Fun Weekend

In this edition of Through My Lens, I take on a Fun Weekend during Fun Fun Fun Fest 2014 in Austin, TX.

After years of shooting concerts and festivals with two DSLRs, three lenses, multiple batteries, and other accessories, I was looking forward to trying out a mirrorless system. I've been researching different mirrorless systems (Panasonic and Fuji, among others) for about a year now, but have yet to make the jump. After watching a video of photographer Jason Lanier talking about his 10 reasons why he left his Nikon system for a Sony mirrorless system and boasting about how great these smaller cameras were, I wanted to try it out for myself.

For Fun Fun Fun Fest, I rented a Sony a6000 from Borrow Lenses with a 16mm f/2.8 and a 10-18mm f/4 wide angle lens. For insurance's sake, I took my Canon 7D with a Sigma 24-70mm 2.8 lens to the Fest. I pretty much kept the a6000 around my neck the whole weekend. I only really brought my 7D out when shooting artists live, but even then, the a6000 was great to shoot with. After shooting with the Sony a6000 all weekend, I can safely say I love this little camera. It gave me the freedom I was looking for to shoot street photography that my mobile doesn't give me. The WiFi technology made it seamless to take a shot, send it to my phone, edit, and post on social media.

Below are a bunch of photos I shot from the whole weekend, mostly from the Sony a6000 and a few with my Canon 7D.

Fun Fun Fun Fest Full Schedule Released

In just a few short weeks, Fun Fun Fun Fest will be returning to Austin, TX. It wasn't that long ago that we found out the daily band lineups, and now, we have the full hourly schedule for the three-day festival. As we've noted previously, each stage represents a genre of some sort, so if you're a fan of indie rock, for example, you won't have to bounce between stages to catch the bands you'd be more inclined to see, which is a pretty ingenious way of organizing stages. Well done, FFF Fest! Check out the full daily schedule below.

Fun Fun Fun Fest 9 Comedy Lineup Announced

Fun Fun Fun Fest 9's music lineup has been set since May, with the festival's daily lineups released a few weeks ago. However, there were still question marks as to who would be taking the festival's vaunted "Yellow Stage," which has been a platform for both comedians and spoken word artists in the past. Finally, the dust has settled and the curtains have been pulled back to reveal who'll help round out the Austin, TX festival.

Fun Fun Fun Fest 9 organizers have announced today that the Yellow Stage will feature such acts as Portlandia's Fred Armisen, Silicon Valley's Thomas Middleditch and Kumail Nanjiani, former Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra, Kroll Show's Jon Daly, and legendary filmmaker John Waters, amongst others. In addition to the comedians and spoken word artists, the Yellow Stage will also feature events including the FFF Fest Dating Show, the Air Sex Championships, the Altercation Punk Comedy Tour, wrestling matches, and much much more.

To find a complete list of Yellow Stage acts, as well as single day passes on the Fun Fun Fun Fest website.

Fun Fun Fun Fest 9's Day Lineups Announced

Less than a month after the lineup for Austin's Fun Fun Fun Fest 9 was revealed, the organizers have both revealed the daily lineups for the festival's three days and have made opened up sales for individual day tickets. You can head over here to purchase tickets for each day (or to simply buy a 3 day pass).

The day lineups are fairly balanced with each day offering not only a wide selection of artists, but also an eclectic lineup that will make festival goers want to go every day rather than target one specific day as the "best" day. Friday's lineup highlights include Blood Brothers, Death from Above 1979, Radkey, Peelander-Z, 2 Chainz, Atmosphere, Run the Jewels, and Dinosaur Jr. Saturday's lineup highlights include Glassjaw, Nas, Girl Talk, The Internet, Death Cab for Cutie, The New Pornographers, and Guided by Voices. Sunday's lineup highlights include Death Grips, Wiz Khalifa, Flying Lotus, Sky Ferreira, Freddie Gibbs and Madlib, and Neutral Milk Hotel.

You can see the full day lineups below.

Fun Fun Fun Fest 9 Lineup Announced

Festival lineup announcement season is in full effect. Following last week's amazing Riot Fest announcements, Austin, TX-based Fun Fun Fun Fest just released their lineup for this year's event in November. Taking place from November 7th - 9th, Fun Fun Fun Fest 9 features some heavy hitters across all genres, including Judas Priest, Death Grips, Blood Brothers, Glassjaw, Death from Above 1979, Nas, 2 Chainz, Wiz Khalifa, Run the Jewels, Death Cab for Cutie, Neutral Milk Hotel, Yo La Tengo, and more.

Based on the announcement poster (which you can see below), each of the festival's three stages seems to be separated by genre, with the black stage focusing on punk/rock-oriented bands, blue stage for hip hop and "urban" artists, and the orange stage tailored for indie rock bands. The non-musical portion of FFF9, the comedy and sports lineups, will be announced at a future date.

Passes for Fun Fun Fun Fest 9 are already on sale, which can be purchased here.

The Tontons: "Magic Hour"

As we ease our way into the new year, one of the more exciting acts on the cusp is Houston-based foursome, The Tontons, who released their latest single, "Magic Hour" on Rolling Stone. The group enjoyed considerable success in 2013, releasing their debut video, "Veida" on The Wall Street Journal's music website and playing Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, Texas, where they opened for Kurt Vile to start the fest and where we caught up with them as well. The group's funky, upbeat vibes can make even sitting inside on a cold snowy day seem pleasant.

Check out the latest from The Tontons by downloading the song on Rolling Stone.
