[Video] Jimmy Fallon & Will Smith Perform 'The Evolution of Hip-Hop Dancing'
Jimmy Fallon recently made his move from "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" to "The Tonight Show", ending the regin of the big-chinned man himself, Jay Leno. Fallon seems to have hit the ground running, re-hashing a version of his recurring segment with Justin Timberlake where the pair rap through the library of hip-hop, this time joining forces with none other than The Fresh Prince himself, Will Smith, who helped Jimmy get through dances like 'The Stanky Leg', 'The Cabbage Patch' and 'The Running Man'. I couldn't imagine Leno having any bend in his legs to get out of his chair, let alone bust a move with Agent J. Check out the full video of Fallon and Smith doing their thing, streaming below.

Is Nicki Minaj Really 'The Queen' of Hip-Hop?
Let's face it, Nicki Minaj has never been one to shy from controversy or public discourse. She's sexual, abrasive, and at times, down right raunchy, but now that Lil' Kim is pregnant, the public is in need of the next "super femcee". In much the same way that the public is regularly appeased by the rolling out of one addition to our daily lives that make things "diverse" (think Howard Cain's candidacy, the new 'hispanic' Bachelor, Wes Welker at receiver) that are placed there to end the 'controversy' of their absence. In short, if we have one person/thing that's different, we've covered our bases. It's this line of thinking that has vaulted Nicki Minaj to the forefront of females in hip-hop and has raised plenty of talking points on whether she deserves it.
Just before the weekend, Minaj returned from relative silence to drop the song and accompanying visual for "Lookin Ass N**ga." It's a powerful lyrical undertaking that calls to mind her ruthless verse on 2010's "Monster." It's a riveting, bone shaking verse that make plenty of statements and conjectures for the game to take note of, but does it really make Nicki deserving of the 'top female title'? And is she the best image to portray?
Before we get carried away, let's back up. It's an age-old tale in hip hop that anyone without a Y chromosome is placed into a separate category called "female rappers". From there, it splits into two distinctly different camps. For sake of the argument, let's call them the Lauryn and Kim camps, the former being Ms. Hill and the latter, Lil' Kim of Bad Boy fame. Female artists, much more than their male counterparts, are subject to fitting into one of two stereotypes: artistic or ratchet. Either you have the ass to go with the shaky bars and the money that comes with it, or you focus on the craft and sacrifice the fame and money. Female artists have always been highly marketed in hip-hop as sex objects, Lil Kim thrust her pelvis at more front rows than many working girls in attempts to sell records and Nicki Minaj is shrouded by rumors of drastic plastic surgery to achieve that continent-sized backside. But what about the artistry? Sure, Nicki has tremendous skill, that is exemplified in the "Lookin' Ass N**ga" video and beyond, but would she have the same impact, would she be referred to as the best female rapper, if she didn't have the assets?
Artists like Rapsody, Rah Digga, Angel Haze and Jean Grae represent several generations of female artists brave enough to not exploit their femininity for a superficial commercial success. Nicki Minaj is widely regarded as the best female MC in the game, regardless of the fact that her last label project was 2012's Roman Reloaded which, despite debuting at No. 1 thanks to the Cash Money push, was described by Randall Roberts of the LA Times as a "disjointed, artistically confused" album. As much as I can appreciate the skill with which Nicki addresses how people approach her, but how much can she really complain about people looking at her ass when she promotes it more than a Thursday night NBC sitcom? Anyway, my point is, Nicki can do her thing for sure, but I'd rather see someone else get the spotlight for once.

[Video] Angel Haze: "Battle Cry" (Feat. Sia)
Angel Haze continued promotion of her debut label project, Dirty Gold over the weekend with the release of her latest video, this one for the track "Battle Cry". The videos is a bit of a parallel for the young Detroit-born Universal signee, who flexed her artist muscle by threatening to release Dirty Gold herself via the Internet a la Danny Brown as a way to force the record company's hand in releasing the project. It worked, and Dirty Gold has been a pleasurable journey of new music from one of the more gifted lyrical rappers in terms of delivery. The video for "Battle Cry" is powerful to say the least, featuring a basic shot of Haze rapping and walking down a desert rode, flanked by images of what is supposed to be her past as she reflects on an upbringing in the strict Pentecostal Apostolic Church and the abuse she faced as a child, all set to her confidently handled bars that hit with resounding urgency amid the aesthetic that is built with the surrounding images. The video, which contains a message urging fans to ""are affected by any of the themes of this video" to donate to Child Helpline International, a nonprofit organization that supports and creates tools to communicate with children in need around the world." The visual fades to black with Haze gallantly raising her fist in one of the more powerful uses of the spoken word I've heard as of late. Check out the full video, streaming below.

[Video] Jay Dot Rain: "Grits N' Gravy"
I've been following Alabama-based artist Jay Dot Rain for awhile now, since featuring him on the site as one of our First Look features. The crafty, soul-filled MC brings a flavor from the south that we haven't heard in a minute, doign with boom-bap-like sounds and soul samples what A$AP Rocky did bringing trill music east a few years back. Teaming up with BeatBlockaz, Jay Dot has begun firmly establishing himself as an artist to know as 2014 lurches into full gear. Recently, we got a fresh video for his track "Grits N' Gravy", the first single off his upcoming project, Trap Jazz, due out next month. The video, shot & edited by LeXander Bryant of ORGNZD, follows Jay Dot and crew as they kick in Tuscaloosa and ruminate on all aspects of "Grits N' Gravy". Jay Dot's last video, for "How I Do" showed the same squad doing their thing in Times Square in NYC and here they bring it back home. Check out the latest from Jay Dot Rain, below.

[Mixtape] Lil Herb: "Welcome to Fazoland"
The day has finally come for Chicago's own Lil Herb to step out on his own. After first hitting the scene early last year with fellow south side artist Lil Bibby on the strength of their joint project which produced nods from the likes of Drake, and a slew of record labels. After sharing the spotlight as a duo, Bibby stepped out at the end of November 2013 with his powerful solo offering in his singular debut project, Free Crack, which continued to push him as one of Chicago's must-see acts. Today, his counterpart gives us his latest, the highly anticipated Welcome To Fazoland, which aims to establish Lil Herb (G Herbo?) as the next in line to pop from the Second City. The project, hosted by Don Cannon and released today via DatPiff, is precisely what the rap world has been waiting for from Herb. Utilizing a distinctly calm tone to his voice, Herb glosses over the issues facing his community and city in a way that feels authentic without getting preachy, feels less like a report than a young man relaying what he sees around him. On "At The Light" he discusses the complex issue of simply sitting in his car at a stoplight, and the problems that seemingly innocuous, everyday action can bring by rhyming "Summertime I remember them nights/I know n**gas out for my life/Gotta look to my left and my right/I be damned I get left at the light" It's an impressive stepping out for a young artist eager to make a name for himself on the solo game the same way he got his buzz up with Bibby next to him last year. Welcome To Fazoland might be just the debut to get him to the next level. Check it out, available for stream and download below.
De La Soul Release Discography For Free
De La Soul celebrated Valentine's Day and the 25th anniversary of their seminal album, 3 Feet High and Rising, by releasing their entire library of music for free on their website today. Beginning at 11 a.m. EST, the full discography of one of the most iconic and progressive rap groups of all time for 25 hours. It's an unprecedented dumping of music by the NYC trio and a furtherance of major artist's use of the Internet to market their music and keep their names in the news cycle. In December of last year, Beyonce dropped her latest album, a 14-track 'visual' album by surprise on the web without any prior marketing or advertising around it. That project went on to shatter sales numbers for the year.
With this move, De La Soul really isn't tearing down too many borders (their discography is easily available via illegal torrent sites), although it could go a long way in re-introducing what many consider a 'golden age' of hip-hop music to a new generation. It's crazy that De La is celebrating a 25 year anniversary, and it would be a fitting homage to their first project if the re-release of their initial offering to fans causes a resurgence in younger listeners. [Songs of the Day] Peter CottonTale's Valentine's Day Love Jams
Valentine's Day is nothing without the music. Sultry sounds and smooth beats can go a long way towards setting the perfect mood on your February the 14th, and few know this better than the one and only Peter CottonTale. When deciding on who to turn to for a romantic mix of music to get listeners in the mood for tonight, CottonTale, who evokes thoughts of old school jazz and soul music with his own production, seemed like a logical choice. With an eclectic taste, the Acid Rap crafter put together a group of songs that can give even the stiffest of dudes some swagger in their step. The playlist is available on Spotify, so feel free to take CottonTale with you as you venture out into the night. Without further ado, I give you "Peter CottonTale's Valentine's Day Love Jams".
[Songs of the Day] 2/13/14 (Feat. Jeremih, Kirk Night, Little Dragon & More)
There are a few over-arching themes throughout February that seem to dictate much of the music that is made in the thirty-one days that make up the second month of the year, and it seems each is touched on in our latest entry of today's "Songs of the Day". Leading off our list is Pro-Era affiliate Kirk Night, who lays down what's real in his latest track, "Pussy Facx" while EDM queen Odesza teams up with Madelyn Grant for a dance-inducing romp in "Sun Models". The Game and Problem showed that Midwest slang has finally hit the coast in "THOT", Vulkan The Crusader touches on the important questions this time of the year, offering up, "Do You Remember How To Love?"and Jeremih teamed up with EDM act Shlomo for a new track in "No More". MØ takes things back to "Spice World" on "Say You'll Be There" while Little Dragon gives us "Klapp Klapp". Chicago's young gunners got some play today too as Michael Christmas and Alex Wiley got together for "Step Brothers" and Jams Dean continues the Valentine's Day sentiment with "Why Do I Love You" where he reprises his positive collaboration with producer Netherfriends. Wrapping up today's tracks are RiFF RaFF going country in "Take You Away" and CyHi The Prynce offers up "Coretta" in honor of the wife of Martin Luther King Jr. Check it all out, streaming below.
