Brockhampton Challenges Internet Culture With "1997 Diana"

Over the last two weeks America’s favorite boy band Brockhampton has uploaded three singles that are all tied together by their titles. The first song was titled “1999 Wildfire”, followed with “1998 Truman”. The most recent in the series, called “1997 Diana”, came out last night complete with a video directed by Kevin Abstract. In classic Brockhampton style the track starts with a chorus and then a main verse, but quickly moves into multiple Brockhampton members trading 8 bar verses that loosely hang together thematically but are matching in energy. The group’s leader, Kevin Abstract sings the chorus, repeating, “Niggas talk shit, talk a whole lot of shit/Need to stop talking shit and give us more, more” over and over. The video, which is set in a gymnasium and a locker room, drips with masculinity so intense that you can almost smell it.

In May, Brockhampton kicked out founding member, Ameer, over sexual misconduct allegations and cancelled a handful of upcoming tour dates. They had already announced an upcoming album titled Puppy before the hiatus, but since then the album itself has changed and so has the title. In June, they appeared on Jimmy Fallon and announced that their upcoming album will be called The Best Years of Our Lives. What is interesting about the three tracks that they’ve released so far, is that the titles have been going in descending order starting with 1999, with a pop-culture reference from each year. “1999 Wildfire” is a reference to a documentary from 1999 called Wildfire: Feel The Heat. Next, “1998 Truman” refers to The Truman Show which was released in 1998. “1997 Diana” is a reference to the widely seen and publicized death of Princess Diana. The other single that they have released was simply called “Tonya”, but if the other tracks show a trend it may be called either “1994 Tonya” in reference to the actual events or “2017 Tonya” if the movie references continue.

The song names poise an existential question about public tragedy and memory. It seems that Brockhampton is challenging the soft nostalgia that internet culture places on the 90’s by bringing tragedy to the forefront. Rather than the warm blanket of “only 90s kids remember” that is thrown over the decade, they point to a time when it wasn’t normal for our lives to be in the public eye, and the paranoia and fear that came with the idea that we are moving into a future where everything is always public. Think about why Diana died, running from tabloid scandal, or the central theme of The Truman Show where Jim Carey lives his life as a part of a show for everyone’s entertainment. Then think about the Kardashians and how normal that is now.

The album is called The Best Years of Our Lives and the tracks are all named after years that the members have lived through so it may also be a question of how we qualify a year. What makes a given year better than another? This has been a prominent part of the national dialogue since Trump took office in 2016. I’ve seen 2016, 2017 and 2018 each called the worst year of all time, but the internet (and thereby public opinion) is full of hyperbole. However, that hyperbolic view of existence goes both directions. We are so quick to label things as “the best” these days that it has come to mean nothing. In an age of oversaturation how are we ever sure that anything is really the best? And in the internet era, how are we ever sure what is private and what is public? Brockhampton knows this all too well after being surrounded by controversy for the past 3 months. It will be interesting to see what the rest of the references are, and if they answer the questions that they are bringing up.

[Video] Kanye West Appears on 'Late Night with Seth Myers'

Kanye West, with his Yeezus tour finally over and some time on his hands, decided to stop by Seth Myers' new show and help him continue to break into the late night circuit by stopping by to chat about the extravagant tour, get some baby news out of the way and clear the stage for the real show, which came after the brief back and forth between the husband of Kim Kardashian and the former 'Saturday Night Live' cast member who took over for Jimmy Fallon in the late night spot after the Jay Leno domino finally fell, opening the lines of succession. Kanye performed what became a career-spanning set that touched on his hits from the entirety of his catalogue, begininning with "Jesus Walks", "Touch The Sky" and "Stronger" before making his way through the dark 808s & Heartbreaks days, even live auto-tuning "Heartless" and continuing on to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and beyond, wrapping things up with a rousing rendition of "Black Skinhead" to wrap things up. Will Smith and Jimmy Fallon Evolution of Hip Hop Dance

[Video] Jimmy Fallon & Will Smith Perform 'The Evolution of Hip-Hop Dancing'

Jimmy Fallon recently made his move from "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" to "The Tonight Show", ending the regin of the big-chinned man himself, Jay Leno. Fallon seems to have hit the ground running, re-hashing a version of his recurring segment with Justin Timberlake where the pair rap through the library of hip-hop, this time joining forces with none other than The Fresh Prince himself, Will Smith, who helped Jimmy get through dances like 'The Stanky Leg', 'The Cabbage Patch' and 'The Running Man'. I couldn't imagine Leno having any bend in his legs to get out of his chair, let alone bust a move with Agent J. Check out the full video of Fallon and Smith doing their thing, streaming below.

[Video] Neko Case Performs on Conan

Neko Case graduated to a new level of notoriety last year on the strength of her mouthful of an album, The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You. The project found itself surrounded by the likes of Kanye West and Arcade Fire atop many of 2013's picks for top albums of the year and that has vaulted her onto the national stage. One of those stages is Conan's late night spot on TBS, which Case stopped by to perform her song, "Ragtime" with Calexico. It's a refreshing performance to start your day off properly, watch the full set below.

[Video] Broken Bells Perform on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon

Broken Bells, the collaborative effort of DJ Danger Mouse and The Shins' James Mercer made music industry waves back in 2009 when the pair released their self-titled project that mixed sultry, smooth aesthetics with Mercer's gentle vocals to create a sublime album that can be listened back to front at almost any time of the day. Quiet since then, Danger Mouse and Mercer have been slowly building a mountain of anticipation for their announced 2014 release, After The Disco, which they teased over the past couple of months. The project is due out on February 4 and in continuing promotion, the duo visited "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" to play "Holding On For Life" and "After The Disco". Check out performances of both, streaming below and keep it locked for the latest on Broken Bells.

[Video] Disclosure & Sam Smith Perform "Latch" Live on Fallon

English dance music duo Disclosure made their North American television debut last night, performing their song "Latch" with crooner Sam Smith on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon while in New York City as part of their current tour. The pair proved why they have been vaulted to the forefront of the new music scene in America over the past year, performing with a uniquely interesting stage set-up that I haven't seen on Late Night before, complete with a laser face that mimicked Smith's facial movements as he sang. Disclosure is just the latest in a long line of talented British dance acts and shows why in the video below. Sam Smith absolutely kills on the live vocals, taking the typical electronic set up a notch with the decidedly live addition. Check it all out below.

[Video] Big Sean, Kid Cudi Perform on Jimmy Fallon

G.O.O.D. Music was in the building with Late Night with Jimmy Fallon yesterday as Big Sean and Kid Cudi stopped by to do their thing with house band The Roots. Sean, on tour in support of his latest album Hall of Fame, stopped by the set of the show to perform his song "First Chain" with Cudi. Check out the video from the performance below.

[Video] The Avett Brothers on Jimmy Fallon

The Avett Brothers visited Jimmy Fallon and The Roots yesterday to perform their single "Vanity" with Soundgarden front man Chris Cornell. The performance was a precursor to the band's upcoming album, Magpie and the Dandelion, which was recorded at the same time as Avett Brother's 2012 release The Carpenter, is due out on October 15.
