[Songs of the Day] 3/5/14 (Feat. JODY, Big Sean, Leather Corduroys & More)

Wednesday brought about more music, and it's all here for you to enjoy. Big Sean got quite a canvas from which to spit as Kanye West and DJ Mustard teamed up on the production side for "Sanctified", a soul-entrenched sample piece that has everyone's distinct skills on display. The talented duo of SaveMoney rappers Kami De Chukwu and Joey Purp dropped a new track, "Dat Strong" as their alias Leather Corduroys (what is hotter than a pair of leather corduroys?) which premiered on Fader. PARTYNEXTDOOR got a remix of his song "R A I N" by Rochelle JOrdanBig K.R.I.T. continued to stream out new music, this time linking up with A$AP Ferg for "Lac Lac" which dropped on Rap Radar earlier and BADBADNOTGOOD offered up a new one in "Can't Leave The Night". JODY dropped a gem in their latest single, "M.I.A" and Freddie Carrera teamed up with Taylor Bennett for a new one in "20 More".

Dre Green & The GTW: "Neymar Night"

Brazilian soccer player Neymar is widely known as one of the top athletes in the world. Today, he serves as inspiration for the latest single from Dre Green and The GTW, as the pair ruminate on the Barcelona forward as they kick it one on one. The GTW handles the beat on this one, taking things up to a signature 90s-esque dance vibe that he mixes with tribal drums, a staple of the "Chigeria" sound he has been crafting in Chicago for awhile now. Dre Green's sinewy, multi-layered voice is complemented well by supporting vocals as well from GTW. Check out the song below.

[RH Feature] Lili K: Hard out here for a soul singer

Lili K is very much a different breed in today's music scene. Without frills, clever marketing schemes or extravagant funding, the Milwaukee native and current Chicagoan has made a name for herself on talent and hustle, in a genre that is lacking listeners or widespread publicity.

It is hard to pin down Lili at first glance. The tattooed, blond haired white girl, occasionally sporting a hoop between her nostrils, sometimes looks better suited for a hardcore rock show than a jazz club, albeit with a sort of elegant swagger that can be hard to pinpoint.

Success can be relative for a neo-soul singer in the modern age, and a tough exterior can go a long way. Having just played an opening set with one of her heroes, Musiq Soulchild, weeks ago at The Shrine on Chicago's near south side, the recent Columbia College graduate exited stage left, got a hug from the man of the hour, teared up a little bit at meeting one of her heroes; and retreated back to her far North side loft to prepare for the next thing on the agenda. Because, if all you have is your fans and your health, the hustle is a little more real.

Soul music doesn't always pay the bills. But the difference between Lili and many of her contemporaries is her unwillingness to bargain with her passion, a sort of tunnel vision that has helped carve her standing amongst fellow singers across the country.

"I feel like my aesthetic and music and personality combine into this quirky, not-what-people-expect type of artist, and I love that. I sing soul and jazz music, I love hip hop so that's always in there somehow, I like to wear weird clothes, and I love to be goofy," said Lili. "I don't have a gimmick, I don't use the whole 'sex sells' mantra, I just make the music I love and stay true to myself. It's not mainstream, but it's real."

JODY: "Floodin"

Chicago-based group, JODY, consists of The GTW, David Robertson, Khallee Standberry-Lois, Cole Johnson and production duo The Drums. Their first single "Echos" was featured here about two weeks ago and today the Nu-Soul/R&B collective has release yet another smooth record in the form of "Floodin", a spaced-out and blissful track that hypnotizes the listener with melodic vocals by The GTW and Standberry-Lois and a fitting instrumental. Shouts to FACT Mag on the premiere.
