Mogwai: "Remurdered"

Not many people know this, but Mogwai's 2003 album Happy Songs for Happy People is one of my "island" albums. The gods of post-rock have an innate ability to craft narratives that run the gamut of emotions through fully-instrumental songs. Tracks like "Stop Coming to My House" have haunted me with images of a short film I'll hopefully have the chance to put in front of a camera, while the band's most popular album, Mr. Beast, has been compared to My Bloody Valentine's legendary Loveless (which itself is also one of my "island" albums).

With the Glasgow band's next album, Rave Tapes, scheduled to come out on January 21st, 2014, the first single, "Remurdered," has just been released. Like most Mogwai songs, "Remurdered" starts ominously enough with a repeating palm-muted guitar and a subdued synthesizer. Halfway through the song, the synthesizers become more prevalent, resulting in a more upbeat rhythm, yet still retaining the somber tone of the first half.

If this is your first foray into post-rock, I highly recommend checking out Mogwai's back catalog, especially Happy Songs for Happy People (for obvious reasons).
