ProbCause: "Biting Down" (Lorde Remix)

Fresh off a successful album release with The Recipe Vol. 2 and a summer playing North Coast and going on tour across the country with Cherub, Chicago native ProbCause returns home with a little something up his sleeve, releasing his remix of young Lorde's song "Biting Down", produced by COFRESI and released by Thissongissick. The slowed down version of the chorus mixed with rapid trap drums lays the perfect setting for Prob to do his things and brings to mind EDM-fueled singles like "LSD" that Prob has been mastering as of late. With him spending so much time on the road with the likes of Cherub, could we soon see a collab? Check it out below.

[Album] Wes P.: "Blow Your Mind"

Chicago producer Wes P. released his EP, Blow Your Mind, earlier today on DJBooth.com. The project is executive produced by fellow Chicagoan and often collaborator ProbCause, as well as John Basics. It is a genre-packed tape with everything from trap and house to hip-hop that can appeal to a wide range of fans and listeners. Take some time out of your day today to check out what Wes cooked up this time.

[Video] ProbCause: "Prelude to Summer Pt. 1"

He may be out of town, on tour with Cherub, but the homie ProbCause dropped a new video, "Prelude to Summer Pt. 1" featuring footage from his North Coast set, as well as party scenes from The O'My's place a couple weeks ago. The track, produced by Na$im Williams and Drew Mantia gets some visual aid from Elijah Alvarado who shot and edited. If nothing else, Prob always knows how to put on for Chicago and this video is as hometown as it gets, "the city that works, but also knows how to relax." If you haven't already, pick up The Recipe Vol. 2 and check in on Prob as he crosses the country on tour.

[RH Photos] North Coast Music Festival 2013 Day 1

Photos by RaRa Photography

Weather doesn't seem to like Chicago festivals much, and the latest edition of North Coast at Union Park was no exception. The festival got off to a familiar beginning as those in attendance were evacuated from the park within hours of arriving due to a storm that quickly swept through the area. As memories of Bjork getting cut short weeks earlier at Pitchfork Festival danced in everyone's heads, careful planning by organizers REACT Presents and 1833 got North Coast going again before 8 o'clock and sent hundreds dashing across baseball fields and basketball courts to catch RL Grime who restarted the party and essentially re-opened the festival for the weekend.

The soggy crowd bounced between the remaining acts. AlunaGeorge made their US festival debut, playing on the main stage with an electrifying outfit. With only 30 minutes left, they rocked the stage with a graceful performance. The festival continued on with other acts from Laid back Luke, Mac Miller, and Passion Pit who gathered a crowd to the furthest point of the park.

Despite Passion Pit's equipment being severely damaged by the storm they did not disappoint the crowd by canceling, instead playing a DJ set to the enjoyment of a positive and responsive crowd. Mac Miller, performing on the North Stage, put on an inspired performance while playing a variety of his increasingly extensive library as he touched on content from 2009's KIDS to this year's Watching Movies With The Sound Off to a young, raucous crowd.

The surprise act of the day was certainly Chicago's own ProbCause, whose 7 o'clock Tent Stage performance was pushed back, putting him onstage at the same time as Mac and Paper Diamond, who put on a live performance himself. Despite beginning the set with a sparse crowd, Prob faced the adversity head on and rocked the crowd like he was on the main stage, attracting fans old and new. Later, I headed to the Bottom Lounge where he joined fellow North Coast performer Psalm One onstage for the Just Blaze after show.

Day 1 of North Coast may have been set back by the sudden storm, but delivered to everyone who came out. North Coast handled the situation gracefully with a fast and easy path back into the festival and a safe end to it all. -

Chopping Up 'The Recipe' with ProbCause

Things come about in abstracts for ProbCause. The Evanston, Ill., native, who is in the process of wrapping up a MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, has become known around his city for pointed lyricism and careful collaborations. On his latest project, The Recipe Vol. 2 he seeks to have his message stimulate eyes and ears alike while pulling from all corners of burgeoning the Windy City scene.

The Recipe vol. 2 is a departure for the Psalm One protege-an exploration of blending separate aspects of himself and those around him into one cohesive project.

As a kid growing up in the north Chicago suburb of Evanston, Prob began taking daily rides south on the Purple line towards the city to graffiti. New to the culture, he quickly discovered the inevitable link between graffiti and hip-hop.

"I think that has always been a thing for me, trying to figure out how to combine music and art," said ProbCause. "With this album I did individual visual art for all of the songs on it."

Crammed into a small stall amongst a catacomb of artist spaces off of Monroe St. in the loop is Prob's work. As he describes different tracks from the latest installment of The Recipe, he shows off his original visual components.

Hanging from the white walls, the paintings vary from abstract meanings to sports motifs. Pointing at one of an old-school basketball player he smiles, "Phil Jackson in the old days". Probcause may be from Evanston, but he can appreciate a strong mustache like any naturalized Chicagoan.

The complex drawings pair with each track and evoke the mood and theme of the overall piece, acting like a road map to his latest project, one that takes the listener on a trip around his adopted hometown.

[Video] ProbCause: "LSD" (feat. Chance the Rapper)

The video for ProbCause's "LSD" has just released. Featuring Chance the Rapper, the Elijah Alvarado-directed visuals depict a cacophony of bright shapes and colors in an attempt to match the trip the drug causes. It's abstract, crazy, absurdist, bright, colorful, and above all, fun. Serious props to Elijah for the CG wizardry in this video. If you haven't already, make sure you pick up ProbCause's The Recipe Vol. 2 that dropped yesterday. Chicago's on the come up!
