John Francis Daley, Jonathan M. Goldstein to Write Spider-Man Reboot

The Spider-Man reboot finally has screenwriters, and they're a formidable duo. Following the announcement of Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Jon Watts as the director comes news that the writing duo of John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein will be handling script duties. The two have written Horrible BossesHorrible Bosses 2, and are making their directorial debut with this summer's Vacation.

Back when the purported shortlist of directors for Spider-Man was released, Daley and Goldstein were present. In fact, the duo was my personal favorite to direct the film. To have them involved in the project is a great sign for the film. As anyone who has seen Horrible Bosses and/or Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 can attest, Daley and Goldstein have a great handle on modern comedy and pop culture.

With everybody in place, we can expect to hear a plethora of rumors pertaining to the plot in the months to come. And you know what? I can't wait.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

E3 2015: Highlights from Sony's Press Conference

[youtube id="Kznek1uNVsg"]

The Final Fantasy VII HD Remake is real. As I passively mentioned last nightFinal Fantasy VII is hands down my favorite video game ever, and despite developer Square Enix's mishandling of the Final Fantasy franchise over the past decade (re: exploitative sequels, spin-offs, narrative retcons, numerous production delays, etc.), I haven't felt this excited about video games in a very long time. Rumor has it that the Final Fantasy VII Remake will be released sometime in 2017 to commemorate the game's 20th anniversary. The game will debut on the PS4 first before being released on other platforms (namely Xbox One and PC). Watch that teaser video over and over (and over and over) until the game's released - I know I will.

Unlike Microsoft's E3 press conference, Sony didn't have much to discuss in terms of hardware, focusing on software instead. One game that I was sure would never see the light of day is Team ICO's The Last Guardian, which was originally announced as a PlayStation 3-exclusive back in 2009. The subsequent years since its announcement left the project shrouded in mystery, with game director Fumito Ueda leaving Sony back in 2011 (although still on staff to see the game through completion) and a lack of presence at major gaming conferences over the years. However, Sony not only confirmed that The Last Guardian was still in development and re-developed for the PS4, it also has a definitive 2016 release date.

Fighting game fans already know Street Fighter V will be coming to the PS4 and PC exclusively. However, Sony revealed that there will be a PS4-exclusive public online beta for the fighter scheduled to begin on July 23rd (for those who pre-order the game).

To cap off the night's theme of revitalizing cherished video game franchises, Sony made a surprise announcement and revealed Shenmue 3 would be a PS4 console exclusive (and will also appear on the PC). Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki appeared to discuss the franchise's legacy and to reveal the game would be partially funded via Kickstarter. At press time, the game has surpassed its initial $2m goal with more than $2.5m already pledged.

Amazing Spider-Man

List of Rumored Spider-Man Directors Released

Spider-Man has always been a humorous character known as much for his wit as his abilities and personal motto. However, despite five films and two actors, the Spider-Man films didn't capture this pivotal aspect of the character. When Marvel Cinematic Universe mastermind Kevin Feige announced future Spider-Man films would be co-handled by Marvel Studios, he made it very apparent that the character's sense of humor would be a focal point for the films.

With the next Spider-Man film scheduled for a 2017 release, Marvel and Sony are rumored to be closing in on a director within the month. Yesterday, a purported shortlist of serious contenders for the director's chair was released, featuring directors known for their comedies.

The list includes Jonathan Levine (50/50Warm Bodies), Ted Melfi (St. Vincent), Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect), Jared Hess (Napoleon DynamiteNacho Libre), and John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein (Horrible Bosses 2, Vacation). Of the rumored names, Daley and Goldstein are my personal favorites due to their script work on Horrible BossesHorrible Bosses 2, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. However, the most interesting name is Hess, whose work post-Nacho Libre has been lacking. Neither of the rumored directors have much experience with action films, although Levine's Warm Bodies did feature some minor action scenes.

It's likely that a director will be announced around the same time the next Spider-Man/Peter Parker is cast, so expect a lot of Spider-Man-related news over the next month!

The Cast of Ghostbusters

Sony Announces Another Ghostbusters Sequel

Yesterday, Sony announced their plans to expand on the upcoming Ghostbusters renaissance with a supplementary film that will feature an all-male cast. The recently-announced film will feature an all-star crew working on the film: Joe and Anthony Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) will direct; Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) will write the script; and Channing Tatum and his partners will produce the film with Tatum in consideration to also star in the film.

In addition to the film announcement, Ghostbusters vets Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd will form a new production company, adequately named Ghostcorps, alongside Sony to expand the franchise into other media to heighten the brand's potential. In an exclusive conversation with Deadline, Reitman explained Ghostcorps' overall plan:

“We want to expand the Ghostbusters universe in ways that will include different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment. This is a branded entertainment, a scary supernatural premise mixed with comedy. Paul Feig’s film will be the first version of that, shooting in June to come out in July 2016. He’s got four of the funniest women in the world, and there will be other surprises to come. The second film has a wonderful idea that builds on that. Drew will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the Russo Brothers’ next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the following year. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies.”

While I'm all for more Ghostbusters films, it seems like this announcement, especially so soon after the confirmation of Paul Feig's all-female Ghostbusters reboot, is a knee-jerk reaction to adhere to the outcry that followed the initial Ghostbusters reboot announcement from a very small, but vocal, percentage. Morever, the announcement was also tied to former Sony executive Amy Pascal's move to the production side of the industry, which paved the way for Ghostcorps to be established. Obviously, details are very sparse about the "guy" Ghostbusters film, so we don't know how it'll support and build off of Feig's film, but it doesn't allow the latter to get time to breathe and gain hype. Instead, I fear that Feig's vision for his Ghostbusters film will be overshadowed by yesterday's announcement.

Current rumors point at yet another shared universe with Tatum and Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) starring. However, given the failure that was Sony's attempt to create a universe around their The Amazing Spider-Man universe, Sony might not be the best studio to go to for such plans. However, with a core that features well-established players like the Russos and Pearce, the prospect of a large Ghostbusters universe is intriguing.

What do you think? Do you feel this new Ghostbusters announcement will overshadow Feig's Ghostbusters film? Let us know!

Spider-Man in Civil War

Spider-Man Officially Joining Marvel Cinematic Universe

It finally happened. After the Sony hacks took place a few months ago, it appeared that a lot of the leaked emails and information would be dead in the water. One such negotiation involved Sony and Disney coming to terms so Spider-Man could appear in official Marvel Cinematic Universe films.

Per the press release Marvel released, the "new Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film from Marvel's Cinematic Universe (MCU)." Afterwards, a Sony Pictures installment will release on July 28, 2017 co-produced by MCU's main behind-the-scenes man, Kevin Feige, and Amy Pascal, former Sony head who faced a lot of criticism following the aforementioned Sony hacks. More importantly, the two "will collaborate on a new creative direction for the web slinger." In addition, the release also states that "Marvel and Sony Pictures are also exploring opportunities to integrate characters from the MCU into future Spider-Man films."

What's interesting to note is that Andrew Garfield is probably out per the release's specific notation of a "new Spider-Man" appearing. Marvel has also adjusted their upcoming release schedule, fitting the upcoming Spider-Man film for July 2017, pushing Thor: Ragnarok to November 2017, Black Panther to July 2018, Captain Marvel to November 2018, and Inhumans to July 2019.

It's an exciting time for superhero film fans, especially those of us who are avid Spider-Man fans that have waited for exactly this moment. With Feige helping oversee the direction of the Spider-Man films, we can finally have the proper Spider-Man film we haven't seen on the big screen yet. Furthermore, the collaboration between Sony and Marvel could open up doors for FOX to negotiate some type of dual deal with Disney and Sony to have their characters (X-Men and Fantastic Four) appear altogether.

Make mine Marvel!

Sony Authorizes Select Screenings of The Interview

Sony has authorized select independent screenings of the controversial The Interview.

The comedy starring Seth Rogen and James Franco is about how the duo land an interview with North Korean leader, Kim Jong-Un, for their famous talk show. Before leaving, they're asked to go on a mission to assassinate the leader. The upcoming release of the film has become a threat of national security in the United States when it became known the infamous Sony hackers come from North Korea. The hackers were willing to expose private information about Sony employees, as well as threatening to cause harm to theaters screening the movie Christmas day.

In an attempt to curb the threats, Sony pulled the film. Since then, fans of the film, as well as the stars, spoke out about the news. The social media world went on a free speech frenzy, and just like a Christmas miracle, Sony listened. Today, the founder of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Texas, CEO Tim League, released the statement below:

We cannot imagine the pressures that have been affecting Sony, at all levels of the organization they have been under attack. Amidst this unwarranted chaos, they have regrouped and listened to the public, the government and the exhibition community and responded with resolve and determination. At 10:45 AM Sony bookers approved screenings at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and other arthouse and independent theaters across the country.

This is the best Christmas gift anyone could give us. We, both distributors and exhibitors, have collectively stood firm to our principles and for the right to freedom of expression.

Two days 'till Christmas, and I am proud to be an American.

Yeah, America!

PlayStation Vue is Sony's Venture into Cloud-Based TV Streaming

Slowly but surely, we're all cutting the cord (very literally) when it comes to TV. It's bad news for service providers like DirecTV and Comcast, but many networks are embracing the new wave of offering subscription-free online services, like HBO recently embraced when they announced HBO Go for all users in 2015. For those that still insist on cable/satellite subscriptions, they can point to the robust On Demand offerings their providers have, something I've sorely missed for years once my family made the switch from Comcast to DirecTV. Needless to say, we all enjoy our TV, no matter how we take it in.

Sony is tapping into that need with their announcement of a cloud-based TV streaming service called PlayStation Vue. The service, which will begin rolling out in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Los Angeles through the rest of the year, will offer both live TV, On Demand content, and temporarily-stored TV episodes through an initial offering of 75 channels per market via the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and iPad with more devices gaining accessibility later on. The networks Sony has already partnered with include CBS, Discovery Communications, Viacom, Fox, NBCUniversal, and Scripps Networks Interactive with more to come. The biggest network not listed (just yet) is Disney, which owns ABC and ESPN.

No pricing has been announced, but Sony has been very up front about not offering contracts - instead, the service will be a month-to-month, pay-as-you-go service with no cancellation fees, which should definitely come as a breath of fresh air to anybody who's had to go through the hassle of canceling their cable or satellite services.

You can read Sony's entire press release below.

SAN MATEO, Calif., Nov. 13, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Network Entertainment International LLC (SNEI) and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today unveiled PlayStation™Vue, a pioneering new cloud-based TV service that reinvents the television experience.

  • PlayStation™Vue delivers catch-up and on-demand TV, freeing viewers to watch TV on their own schedules. The service makes the past three days of popular programming available without the need to schedule recordings.
  • Viewers can save their favorite shows to the cloud without storage restrictions or scheduling conflicts. Once viewers tag a favorite show, they will automatically have access to episodes of that show for 28 days so that they can watch on their own time.
  • PlayStation™Vue is simple to navigate and intuitive to use. By leveraging the power of the PlayStation® platform and controller, viewers are always one click away from quick access to watching, finding, and discovering content.

Sony Xperia C3

Sony Xperia C3 Smartphone Is Built For Selfie Lovers

I guess it was only a matter of time before a company would make a smartphone aimed directly at those that love taking selfies. It seems like nowadays, taking selfies has just become the norm and has become part of the culture we live in. If you enjoy taking selfies, the Sony Xperia C3 might be a match made in heaven. What Sony has created is a smartphone that sports a wide angle 5 megapixel front-facing camera with a built-in soft LED flash, making it very easy to capture those special moments.

Not only does the Sony Xperia C3 have front-facing flash, there are some other software features that should help make the selfie-taking process a little easier, like a Smile Shutter, AR effects, and a feature that lets you tap the back of the phone to take a picture. Now, this smartphone probably won't change the digital photography game, and it won't be for everybody, but if you really like taking selfies you might want to give this a try.
