Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner is taking a stab at conquering Hollywood the way he conquered period piece, advertising-related cable dramas with his film debut, Are You Here. Owen Wilson (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover Part III), and Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) star in the off-beat comedy about childhood best friends facing a family tragedy. When Ben’s (Galifianakis) estranged father dies, he inherits the family fortune. However, when Ben’s sister (Poehler) enters a legal battle to challenge the inheritance, Ben must turn to his best friend, Steve (Wilson), to help him get through it.

Admittedly, the trailer is a little weak. There are a few moments where you can tell it’s stretching for a laugh (especially in the trailer’s opening sequence). With a strong cast of comedians, you’d expect more laughs. When the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, it wasn’t treated very kindly. However, word has it that the film’s theatrical cut is a different version than the one screened at TIFF, so that should be promising for Weiner’s film debut.

I guess we’ll find out for ourselves when Are You Here hits theaters on August 22nd.
