Taking place ten years after the Planet of the Apes reboot, Rise of the Planet of the ApesDawn of the Planet of the Apes features a war-torn landscape in which humans and primates have been fighting following Caesar’s coup in the previous film. With presumably the world’s entire primate population made intelligent from the ALZ-112 gas, Caesar’s primate revolution has grown to a staggeringly large number, causing the human survivors to ask for a truce. Somehow, the peace is quickly ended, and the war rages on.

Matt Reeves (CloverfieldLet Me In) has taken over the directing role from Rise‘s Rupert Wyatt. As a huge fan of Cloverfield, I want to see how Reeves’ vision has shaped the rebooted franchise; unfortunately, this teaser trailer is too short to give any real hints. Outside of Reeves’ involvement, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes looks somewhat bland, like yet another post-apocalyptic, ravaged world where the humans must fight against a supernatural “external” threat. With James Franco and Frieda Pinto not part of the sequel, either, I fear that franchise will just become another generic cash cow reboot.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will be in theaters next July.
