Calvin and Hobbes is one of the best comic strips of all time. Over its ten-year run, creator Bill Watterson waxed poetic on everything from existential crises and politics to intricate snowman creation and space superheroes all through the eyes of a six-year-old boy and his stuffed tiger/imaginary friend. Besides the strip’s sometimes heady themes, Calvin and Hobbes is also known for breaking typical panel format for Sunday comic strips as he began creating multi-panel, half-page strips to further explore the medium and his creativity. Unlike other comic contemporaries like Garfield or PeanutsCalvin and Hobbes has resisted officially merchandising the property outside of the collected volumes (as if it needs to be said, the popular car decals of Calvin pissing on objects back in the ’90s was unlicensed).

Last summer, a Kickstarter campaign was successful in funding a documentary following Watterson’s career and the impact Calvin and Hobbes had on the world. The trailer for Dear Mr. Watterson was released recently to garner attention for the documentary. Its sincere admiration for both Watterson and Calvin and Hobbes will be appreciated by both long-time and new fans. Dear Mr. Watterson will be screening in very select theaters across the country starting next month, followed by VOD downloads on November 15th and a Blu-Ray/DVD release on December 15th.
