After a three-year directing hiatus, The Coen Brothers (The Big Lebowski) are returning with their next film, Inside Llewyn Davis. Oscar Isaac (Sucker Punch) stars as the titular Llewyn Davis, a folk singer-songwriter paving his own way in 1960s era New York loosely adapted from folk singer Dave Van Ronk’s memoir, The Mayor of MacDougal Street. The film also stars Justin Timberlake (The Social Network), John Goodman (Barton Fink), Garret Hedlund (On the Road), and Carey Mulligan (Drive).
The Coen Brothers’ filmography is versatile, never sticking to one specific genre. However, there’s a common theme of character-analytical films. It might not appeal to many casual audiences, but fans of the Coens’ understated direction should eat this one up. Critics at Cannes gave Inside llewyn Davis a great response, so at least it’s clicking with important crowds. Inside Llewyn Davis will open in theaters on December 6th.
