Another film where Johnny Depp plays another eccentric character? Say it ain’t so. Mortdecai is an adaptation of the novel Don’t Point That Thing At Me by Kyril Bonfiglioli about an art dealer and “part-time” rogue, the titular Mortdecai. He goes on an international adventure to recover a stolen painting that could lead to a hidden treasure of Nazi gold. Mortdecai also stars Olivia Munn, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Goldblum, Paul Bettany, and Ewan McGregor.

The teaser trailer is exactly that: a teaser showcasing the Mortdecai character. Mortdecai just seems like the standard same old that we’ve come to expect from Depp where he plays a weird, “quirky” character that ultimately shapes the entire film, covering up anything interesting to be said and done. I’m very obviously jaded and cynical when it comes to Depp’s character performances, but man… enough is enough. I try not to pass judgment so early in a film’s promotional cycle, especially coming off of a teaser trailer, but the “Let Depp act weird for 90+ minutes” routine has become so long in the tooth…

Mortdecai will be in theaters on February 6th.
