Saving Mr. Banks has Oscar-bait written all over it: It’s a drama-driven biopic based on the true story of Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) attempting to nab the film rights for P.L. Travers’ (Emma Thompson) Mary Poppins. It’s an ensemble cast made up of the aforementioned Hanks and Thompson, but also Colin Farrell (Total Recall), Paul Giamatti (Sideways), Jason Schwartzman (The Darjeeling Limited), and more. It’s also scheduled to hit theaters during the final Oscars push just before Christmas, to boot.

The trailer hits on all the right notes, and the synopsis of the film reveals that a large focus will be set on Travers’ memory/relationship with her father, as well as Disney’s own personal relationship with his own father. Time period biopics are practically made to tug on audience’s hearts, but I think there’s going to be something special with Saving Mr. Banks. After all, Tom Hanks is playing Walt Disney.
