Like many films that are finding release this year, The Signal was one of the ones that got away during festival season during the first half of 2014. Directed by William Eubank, whose directorial debut film was the Angels and Airwaves’ sci-fi conceptual film LOVE, The Signal is a sci-fi thriller with an added element of mystery. Brenton Thwaites (The Giver) stars as Nic, one of three college students enamored with the hacking community. During a roadtrip across the Southwest, they begin tracking a hacker who was able to hack into MIT. When their signal leads them to a mysterious area, Nic awakens in captivity and finds himself part of a much larger conspiracy.
The Signal‘s trailer is very vague in regards to what the film is actually like, but it’s something I appreciate. It’s not like bigger films like Godzilla where captivation is withheld under a false sense of intrigue/mystery. Rather, it engrossed me and makes me want to find out more about the film and what the titular “signal” is. Luckily, the wait for The Signal won’t be long as it is opening in limited theaters this Friday.
