Life on the streets is no joke, no matter your age; imagine how much harder it is for young kids. Director George Tillman, Jr’s (NotoriousBarbershop) next film, The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete, explores just how unruly that life can be. Taking place in New York City, the titular Mister (Skylan Brooks) and Pete (Ethan Dizon) must fend for themselves when both of their mothers are taken into police custody. The catch? Mister and Pete are only 13 years old and 9 years old, respectively. Not only do the young children have to find a means to take care of themselves, they also have to avoid both unsavory street characters and child services that would split them up.

Given the film’s title, I’m kind of worried to find out what the “defeat” will consist of, yet I’m also looking forward to some tragedy. Reports from its Sundance screening have been a bit lukewarm, but we’ll see how general audiences respond to it. The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete also stars Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and will find a limited theatrical release on October 11th.
