Common Gound Gala

On April, 16th the Common Ground Foundation hosted a gala to honor women of Excellence and Leadership. The event honored Dr. Maya Angelou, Keke Palmer, Dee Robinson Reid, Sherri Shepherd and featured performances from Common as well as a silent auction. The fundraiser event was attended by many prominent figures, showcasing Common’s vast array of supporters and raising quite a bit of money for his foundation. Thanks to the event we also get this great interview with Common and Dr. Maya Angelou.

Jeff Baraka and Cam Be got the exclusive interview with the pair which explores the back story behind their first meeting as well as Maya Angelou’s feeling on hip-hop.  The ‘Godmother of Hip-Hop’, as Dr. Angelou has been called, believes that “we make a mistake when we say that generations can be separated.” The genre of hip-hop was built on her shoulders, the young acts following her example whether they knew it or not, and the next era will be built on shoulders of those like Common. Hip-hop has had a hard time capturing the hearts of the older generation when compared to younger generation, and this has caused some strife between the two. In reality there would be no hip-hop without those who came before it, leading the way in the movement for civil rights or mastering the art of singing the blues. The interview is a great piece that explores two great minds and is not one to be missed, be sure to check it out after the jump.
