If you’re amongst those who keep their musical calenders in check, or maybe just happen to have glanced at the web today, you have probably spotted that today marks the birthday of Tupac Amaru Shakur. As tragic as his passing was, his legacy left through music has become joyous through the outpouring of love from all generations of new fans whom have all discovered ‘Pac’s records during their journey into Hip Hop music and culture. As his memory lives on through countless tributes on his birthday and anniversary of his death, it is his many friends and family who continue to speak on ‘Pac’s life that make for the greatest living tribute. Through them we are provided a great understanding of Tupac as Hip Hop artist, an actor, a poet, and an activist.
Today I got the luxury of speaking with one of Pac’s earliest artistic influences, Leila Steinberg, who taught, managed, mentored, and more importantly befriended the young poet. Leila organized a poetic and artistic movement through her living room where her and ‘Pac formed a nurturing relationship helping ‘Pac get to where he got in the ‘90s and get Leila to where she is now today. It is safe to say that both Leila and ‘Pac affected each other deeply, and to listen to the story of their connection sheds light on what visions they had for art. I’m proud to say that RubyHornet.com will have this full interview up very soon.
Happy birthday to the late Tupac Amaru Shakur.
