Memorial Day weekend is usually a big boon for Hollywood as it represents the first real push towards the huge summer blockbusters that’ll invade our minds and eyeballs over the next couple of months. Fox’s X-Men: Days of Future Past came out swinging, bringing a solid $90m debut this weekend. The mutants’ return to the big screen poses as a bad sign for Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which fell to fifth place with $7.8m. X-Men‘s $90m is already half of what ASM 2 has made domestically, and financiers have been calling the film a financial underachiever. Last week’s top film, Godzilla, fell to 2nd with $31.4m, bringing its domestic total to $148m. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore’s Blended opened to a respectable $14m for 3rd place, while the Seth Rogen-led Neighbors rounded out the Top 5 with $13.9m for a $113m domestic total. Jon Favreau’s Chef expanded across more theaters, doubling its domestic totals this weekend alone. Heaven is For Real just barely held on to 10th, knocking Captain America: The Winter Soldier out of the Top 10 by $200K.
