Pacific Rim has had a bumpy few months since its release in July. While the film made $100m in domestic sales, it didn’t exactly make the amount that Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures wanted out of a big budget summer film. However, thanks to the film’s huge popularity overseas bringing the total revenue over $400m, the prospects of a sequel were greatly increased.

Recently, writer/director Guillermo del Toro confirmed that he and Pacific Rim screenwriter Tom Beachman have been writing the script for Pacific Rim 2 since the summer. The studio behind the film, Legendary Pictures, approved the movement on the script. However, this doesn’t mean that Pacific Rim 2: Son of Pacific Rim is confirmed; far from it, in fact. The chances of a sequel happening involve how good the script is and whether the studio can make the film happen with the right budget.

It’s kind of a bittersweet victory for Pacific Rim and Guillermo del Toro fans. On the one hand, the script for Pacific Rim 2 is being made. On the other, there’s still a good possibility that it’ll never see the light of day.
