I wish this new, R-rated comedy wasn’t unfortunately named That Awkward Moment. “That awkward moment” invokes bad memories of terrible ’90s rom-coms, and terrible ’90s rom-com, this is not! Directed by Tom Gormican, the film is about three friends’ attempts to stay single when one of them gets dumped. However, when two of them meet new girls, they find themselves in “that awkward moment” where the relationship has to be defined.

The three leads are played by Miles Teller (The Spectacular Now), Zac Efron (Neighbors), and Michael B. Jordan (Chronicle). It seems like Jordan’s appearing in everything these days (Fantastic Four reboot, rumored Independence Day 2 lead), Efron’s building his comedy resume up, and Teller is showing off his comedic timing in practically every scene of the trailer. Raunchy comedies are a dime a dozen these days, but it takes special chemistry between the leads to help separate it from the crowd; based off of this first trailer, I feel like That Awkward Moment could do just that. I only hope that the film’s best punchlines aren’t all dick jokes…

That Awkward Moment will be in theaters on January 31st, 2014.
