I’ll be completely honest: I don’t really understand what’s going on in this French Red Band Trailer for David Cronenberg’s latest film, Maps to the Stars. However, what I can understand is how hooked I am to it. From the man that directed CrashCosmopolis, and Eastern Promises comes a film that offers a scathing look at an “archetypal Hollywood dynasty.” I’ll let the film’s summary speak for itself:

The Weiss family is the archetypical Hollywood dynasty: father Sanford is an analyst and coach, who has made a fortune with his self-help manuals; mother Christina mostly looks after the career of their son Benjie, 13, a child star.

One of Sanford’s clients, Havana, is an actress who dreams of shooting a remake of the movie that made her mother, Clarice, a star in the ’60s. Clarice is dead now and visions of her come to haunt Havana at night. Adding to the toxic mix, Benjie has just come off a rehab program he joined when he was 9 and his sister, Agatha, has recently been released from a sanatorium where she was treated for criminal pyromania…

Robert Pattinson teams up with Cronenberg again following Cosmopolis, while some notable names are included in the cast, such as John Cusack, Mia Wasikoska, and Julianne Moore. Remember, the trailer is Red Band, so it’s not exactly safe for work. The film will premiere at Cannes on May 21st, with a North American date to be announced afterwards, I’m sure.
