Sony Authorizes Select Screenings of The Interview
Sony has authorized select independent screenings of the controversial The Interview.
The comedy starring Seth Rogen and James Franco is about how the duo land an interview with North Korean leader, Kim Jong-Un, for their famous talk show. Before leaving, they're asked to go on a mission to assassinate the leader. The upcoming release of the film has become a threat of national security in the United States when it became known the infamous Sony hackers come from North Korea. The hackers were willing to expose private information about Sony employees, as well as threatening to cause harm to theaters screening the movie Christmas day.
In an attempt to curb the threats, Sony pulled the film. Since then, fans of the film, as well as the stars, spoke out about the news. The social media world went on a free speech frenzy, and just like a Christmas miracle, Sony listened. Today, the founder of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Texas, CEO Tim League, released the statement below:
We cannot imagine the pressures that have been affecting Sony, at all levels of the organization they have been under attack. Amidst this unwarranted chaos, they have regrouped and listened to the public, the government and the exhibition community and responded with resolve and determination. At 10:45 AM Sony bookers approved screenings at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and other arthouse and independent theaters across the country.
This is the best Christmas gift anyone could give us. We, both distributors and exhibitors, have collectively stood firm to our principles and for the right to freedom of expression.
Two days 'till Christmas, and I am proud to be an American.

Madonna banned from Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas for texting during 12 Years a Slave
I've gone on and on about how amazing the experience is to watch a film at an Alamo Drafthouse theater. I've also gone on and on about how strict their rules are. Nobody's safe from the Alamo's "Don't talk or text" rules... even Madonna.
During the New York Film Festival screening of 12 Years a Slave earlier this month, one member of the audience complained to a mysterious blonde woman sitting in front of them over their incessant texting throughout the film. Angered by this, the blonde turned around and angrily responded, "It's for business... enslaver!" Considering the film's theme of racial inequality, it was an ill-advised response, to say the least. It wasn't until the film was over and the woman left that those sitting next to her looked down at her seat to find an envelope addressed to the Pop Queen with tickets to the screening.
Alamo Drafthouse CEO Tim League tweeted the following in response to the claims against Madonna:
Until she apologizes to movie fans, Madonna is banned from watching movies @drafthouse. http://t.co/cHMeseJxMJ

Remember that the next time you talk or text during a film, you won't be any better than Evita herself.

Alamo Drafthouse celebrates "The Summer of 1983"
http://vimeo.com/64586759
I've talked about what an amazing experience it is to watch a film at the Alamo Drafthouse before, and here's an example of some of the cool stuff they have planned this summer. 1983 was a big summer for films with huge releases like Return of the Jedi, National Lampoon's Vacation, Jaws 3D, Octopussy, Risky Business, Scarface, and even more debuting during the hot season. 30 years later, studios would never dare releasing such high profile films with a release lineup as stacked as this. However, Hollywood was a different beast back during the initial 80s boom.
To commemorate such a monumental summer of films, Alamo Drafthouse has scheduled special screenings of the aforementioned movies and more! If you find yourself getting weird in Austin, I highly recommend stopping into a Drafthouse theater and catching some of these classic films. Imagine saying hello to Al Pacino's little friend on a large theater screen with one of the Drafthouse's amazing milkshakes. Austinites, you're living the dream!
You can watch the announcement video below and find the full list of screened films here.
