Neighbors 2

‘Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising’: Comedy sequel that works

Some years have past since the Radner family first battled with exploding couch air bags with the fraternity that moved in next door. Now Mac (Seth Rogen) and Kelly (Rose Byrne) with baby number two coming have decided to sell the house and move out to the quite suburbs.

While this is going on we see three eager freshmen ladies lead by Shelby (Chloë Grace Moretz) challenge the status quo of the typical sorority life. Not having the sexist filled lifestyle that comes with joining a sorority the ladies decide to create their own. With new rules in place that are meant to empower the newly found sorority they look for a home to house all these party hunger weed smoking college students. Moving in next door to the Radner’s, their over the top partying could hurt the selling of their home.

On a thirty-day furlough to sell the house they seek help from an old enemy now turned friend Teddy (Zac Efron) to get the sorority out of the house. Old and new antics explode between everyone as the sorority will stop at nothing to have their right to party while the tag team group of the Radner family and Teddy give it their all to stop this new college party force.

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising continues the laughs we saw in the first film while adding a very funny spin on gender roles. Throughout the film serious dark tones are masterfully handled in a way to deliver sharp hard laughs.

Neighbors 2: Sorrity Rising
Director: Nicholas Stoller
Rating: R
Release Date: May 20, 2016

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising provides a satisfying comedy sequel a rare occurrence that many film franchises get wrong. Teasing fans with a potential third film with a zombie twistNeighbors 2: Sorority Rising is a knockout.

Rogen of course is the comedy lead whose sharp voguer jokes and “dad bod” is the perfect contrast to Efron’s attractive wholesome appel to younger audiences. The two work well off of each other bringing in new laughs from it’s predecessor.

Neighbors 2
Ike Barinholtz, Rose Byrne, Seth Rogen, and Zac Efron in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (2016)

Efron in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising is an unmotivated fraternity member who peaked in college. With all of his fraternity brothers living their well established lives Efron is in a rut. Efron’s rise from rut brings plenty of laughs in his revolutionary journey to find something he’s good at. The crazy antics we see him and Rogen devise against the sorority holds nothing back.

Virtually doing the same gags from the first film, but now against a sorority, the new elements added to the back and fourth attacks make for an over the top hilarious brawl.

Neighbors 2
Chloë Grace Moretz, Beanie Feldstein, and Kiersey Clemons in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (2016)

The new element to Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising is of course the very funny female additions to the cast. Often used a punchline, the feminist ideas in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising challenge social norms in the college Greek life community. With Moretz taking the lead in this rebellious cast of lady misfits they provide Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising the lift this comedy needed to become a comedy classic.

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising was a surprisingly satisfying comedy sequel that outdid its self from it’s processor. It’s over the top antics at times provide grossly laughs as the sorority members stole the show. Packed with explicit one liners and bold hilarious scenes Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising will be hard to top.

Seth Rogen Trips on Drugs in Red Band Trailer for The Night Before

[iframe id="http://players.brightcove.net/3891678521001/a902ec88-bb30-4e2e-a876-da4a256c3258_default/index.html?videoId=4380114460001" autoplay="no"]

Finally, a Christmas film that isn't a Christmas filmThe Night Before stars Seth Rogen (The Interview), Anthony Mackie (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Sin City: A Dame to Kill For) as Isaac, Chris, and Ethan, three long-long best friends celebrating what might be their last Christmas together. The shenanigans begin to unfold after Ethan gets the trio into a huge Christmas party and Isaac is given shrooms and coke as a present by his wife (Workaholics' Jillian Bell).

The trailer starts off on a high note as the trio play Kanye West's "Runaway" on a large toy piano, reminiscent of Tom Hanks's 1988 film Big, then runs through a litany of jokes, such as Ethan telling Isaac's unborn child that Wu-Tang Clan ain't nothing to fuck with at a family dinner, Isaac tripping on the drugs in a limo and weirding out Chris, and a cameo by Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project) and Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex) praising Miley Cyrus's "Wrecking Ball."

The Night Before reunites the trio of Rogen, Gordon-Levitt, and writer/director Jonathan Levine, who all worked together in 2011's 50/50. The film should also give fans a chance to Mackie's comedic side following his more recent Marvel film appearances. The Night Before will be coming to theaters on November 25th.

Film still of Michael Fassbender in Steve Jobs

Watch Michael Fassbender as Steve Jobs in New Trailer

[youtube id="aEr6K1bwIVs"]

Aaron Sorkin has made quite the name for himself in recent years thanks to the success of The Social NetworkMoneyball, and The Newsroom, and can be characterized by his punchy dialogue. Danny Boyle has been a bit more quiet recently, but is known for his stylistic aesthetic in films like Trainspotting28 Days Later127 Hours, and Slumdog Millionaire. The combination of both Sorkin and Boyle's styles comes together in the upcoming Steve Jobs, a biopic on the Apple magnate that focuses on three of his product launches, culminating with 1998's iMac release.

Michael Fassbender (FrankX-Men: Days of Future Past) portrays Steve Jobs alongside a star-studded cast that includes Seth Rogen (The Interview) as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Kate Winslet (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), and Jeff Daniels (The MartianThe Newsroom) as former Apple CEO John Sculley. While there are similarities to the Ashton Kutcher-led Jobs, the critical reception for that film has been terrible, with those portrayed in the film balking at their portrayals and the film's script.

However, with Boyle and Sorkin at the wheel, Steve Jobs looks to be a bigger, better beast than Jobs, and it has the talent and star power (sorry, Ashton) to be the de facto Steve Jobs biopic. Steve Jobs will be in theaters on October 9th.

Sony Authorizes Select Screenings of The Interview

Sony has authorized select independent screenings of the controversial The Interview.

The comedy starring Seth Rogen and James Franco is about how the duo land an interview with North Korean leader, Kim Jong-Un, for their famous talk show. Before leaving, they're asked to go on a mission to assassinate the leader. The upcoming release of the film has become a threat of national security in the United States when it became known the infamous Sony hackers come from North Korea. The hackers were willing to expose private information about Sony employees, as well as threatening to cause harm to theaters screening the movie Christmas day.

In an attempt to curb the threats, Sony pulled the film. Since then, fans of the film, as well as the stars, spoke out about the news. The social media world went on a free speech frenzy, and just like a Christmas miracle, Sony listened. Today, the founder of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Texas, CEO Tim League, released the statement below:

We cannot imagine the pressures that have been affecting Sony, at all levels of the organization they have been under attack. Amidst this unwarranted chaos, they have regrouped and listened to the public, the government and the exhibition community and responded with resolve and determination. At 10:45 AM Sony bookers approved screenings at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and other arthouse and independent theaters across the country.

This is the best Christmas gift anyone could give us. We, both distributors and exhibitors, have collectively stood firm to our principles and for the right to freedom of expression.

Two days 'till Christmas, and I am proud to be an American.

Yeah, America!

SXSW film 2014

[SXSW] Film Festival 2014

[Ruby Hornet will be covering SXSW from March 7th to March 16th. Follow along as we bring you exclusive film reviews, photos, daily features, and interviews with filmmakers, actors, and musicians!]

SXSW may be mostly known for its Music portion of the festival, but the Film half of the events have been building in notoriety over the past few years. While SXSW Film and SXSW Music are two entirely different beasts, they both have their own quirks and charm that keep the SXSW spirit alive throughout the entirety of the festival's duration. Whereas SXSW Music is full of craziness, crowds, and chaos, SXSW Film is more controlled and tempered in terms of its craziness, crowds, and chaos, albeit at a different level. Both Virgil and I (Ge0ff) were out and about last week, taking in as much as Austin and SXSW as we could before the Music crowds came in. Check out some of the photos below that captured some of our downtime in between screenings, some photos from the various film Q&As we attended, and even behind-the-scenes shots of some of the interviews we have lined up for next week. Enjoy!

Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg directing Sega vs. Nintendo film

Growing up as a gamer during the '90s meant the Sega Genesis and Nintendo/Super Nintendo were my first introductions to video games. With the NES as my very first console, I wanted a Super Nintendo for Christmas one year. As fate would have it, Santa delivered not a gray-colored box, but a sleek, sexy black one: the Sega Genesis. Since then, my best friend Sonic the Hedgehog and I have sped through the next few generations of gaming, where I ultimately took my talents to Sony's PlayStation offerings. The rest, as they say, is history.

The '90s gaming scene was cutthroat, with Sega and Nintendo at the forefront of the so-called "console wars." As the infamous Sega ad read, "Genesis does what Nintendon't," which encapsulates what the entire first round of console wars was like, with Sega threatening to overtake Nintendo from their spot atop the gaming industry. Author Blake Harris will be publishing a book this summer focusing on Sega and Nintendo's rivalry entitled Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the Battle that Defined a Generation.

Interestingly enough, the project has been greenlit for a film adaptation directed and written by none other than Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (This is the EndSuperbad). The direction of the film will be entirely in the duo's hands, so expect some type of comedic tone to it. It'd be interesting to see who they get for the film, and exactly how the rivalry will be depicted. As long as Sonic is represented in the best light, that's all that I care about.

[Video] Seth Rogen, James Franco parody Kanye West's "Bound 2" video

When Kanye West dropped the video for "Bound 2" last week, it received a lot of mixed reactions to it. Considering Kanye's pedigree and creative control over his image and branding, it surprised many people. While I understand why he did what he did (I'll probably expand on these thoughts later), it's safe to say that nobody was expecting the final product. However, that's not to say that the video doesn't have its fans.

Seth Rogen and James Franco can be counted as two of them. While shooting their next film together, The Interview, the two decided to film a shot-for-shot parody of the video with Franco playing Yeezy and Rogen playing Kim. What transpires is one of the most awkward and hilarious parody videos yet. Did you know Rogen had back hair? Have you ever seen how awkward Franco is lip syncing and compensating for Kanye's weird hand movements?

Is it better than Kanye's own "Bound 2" video? Watch the video below and find out for yourselves.

Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg invite Sony to the Sausage Party

Seth Rogen (This is the End) and his writing partner, Evan Goldberg (This is the End), are throwing a Sausage Party and you're invited.

Sausage Party will be the pair's first venture into a feature-length animated film and will be based off of a story by the comedic duo and Jonah Hill (This is the End), written for the screen by Rogen, Goldberg, Kyle Hunter, and Ariel Shaffir, and directed by Conrad Vernon (Monsters vs. Aliens) and Greg Tiernan. The film will be an R-rated romp into an anthropomorphic sausage going through an existential crisis, possibly following some marijuana cigarette smoking. I'm already predicting a surplus of "smoked sausage" jokes throughout the film, and I'm definitely not going to complain about a single one.

What we need are more R-rated animated films, and I truly believe Rogen and Goldberg can bring a fresh take on the genre. With a tentative 2015 release date scheduled, all of you have time to prepare for the Sausage Party.
