This summer’s Pacific Rim was Guillermo del Toro’s love letter to kaiju films, as well as a re-introduction to the genre that Godzilla/Gojira paved the path many, many years ago. With Pacific Rim simply setting the tone for public awareness of kaiju, the Gareth Edwards reboot of Godzilla will shatter expectations and show us all how it’s properly done. After a trickle of hints and teases since the summer, the first official look at the new Godzilla has dawned upon us today.

Starring Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Aaron Johnson (The Avengers: Age of Ultron), and Elizabeth Olsen (The Avengers: Age of Ultron), the reboot plays out more like a horror film akin to Cloverfield (sans first-person perspective). The official synopsis for the film says Godzilla will be put up against other kaiju threats to protect humanity. None of that is shown here, hopefully being withheld until future footage appears.

For now, enjoy the new trailer for the Godzilla reboot! It’ll be in theaters on May 16, 2014.
