Earlier this morning, the first official trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 debuted online, and what a trailer it is. Moving away from the unnecessary teen angst from the original The Amazing Spider-Man, this new sequel finds a more mature, more experienced Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) acknowledging his responsibilities. However, when a powerful conflict arises not only in the form of the supervillain Electro (Jamie Foxx), but of a unified conflict driven to take him down, he realizes just how dangerous his new line of work truly is.

Just as the triptych posters prematurely revealed the Green Goblin yesterday, the trailer features the new Green Goblin’s debut, as well as the trilogy’s new Harry Osborn, Dane DeHaan (Kill Your Darlings). I’m a bit disappointed that they opted to go for the “extreme” look for the Goblin similar to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 version of the villain, but that’s just minor nitpicking for an otherwise exciting trailer. The official synopsis for the film implies that OsCorp is behind all of the superpowered beings, running akin to the Ultimate Spider-Man narrative, but also creating a unified universe of villains. If rumors are true, subsequent films will eventually introduce the Sinister Six, a group of supervillains made up of Spider-Man’s most iconic adversaries.

For now, we’ll settle with Rhino (Paul Giamatti), Green Goblin, and Electro. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be in theaters on May 2nd, 2014.
