California Scheming is producer Marco Weber’s (Igby Goes Down) is his written and directorial debut. Starring Gia Mantegna (Frozen Ground), California Scheming has a similar theme to Spring Breakers concerning an unassuming girl introducing those around her to a seedy, alternate lifestyle. Mantegna plays the sultry, seductive Chloe, a new girl to Malibu. With two boys she befriends and another new Malibu girl, Hillary, the group falls prey to Chloe’s foray into less than legal activities.
The vibe is very reminiscent to Spring Breakers, which could either hurt or help California Scheming. Comparisons are bound to be made, and while this trailer doesn’t really do its best to distance the film from Harmony Korine’s grand opus, my fingers are crossed that there’ll be more to California Scheming.
