There was a period of time where the Jimi Hendrix biopic, Jimi: All Is by My Side, didn’t look like it would ever get released. Outside of production problems, Hendrix’s music wasn’t cleared for use, which is typically a death knell for a biopic depicting a musician’s life. However, writer/director John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) was able to work around this by making the focus of Hendrix’s life during 1966-1967 as he began his rise as a musician following his meeting with Linda Keith (Imogen Poots), Keith Richards’ girlfriend at the time.

However, the film’s biggest draw is OutKast‘s Andre Benjamin in the starring role portraying Hendrix. The casting was near perfect, and while reception for the film as a whole has been somewhat lukewarm, Benjamin’s performance has been praised. Jimi: All Is by My Side will be released in theaters on September 26th. You can read the film’s official synopsis below.

OutKast’s André Benjamin stars as Jimi Hendrix in this revealing biopic from Academy Award-winning writer-director John Ridley (12 Years A Slave). Covering a year in Hendrix’s life from 1966-67 as an unknown backup guitarist playing New York’s Cheetah Club to making his mark in London’s music scene up until his Monterey Pop triumph, the film presents an intimate portrait of the sensitive young musician on the verge of becoming a rock legend.
