Jeff Nishinaka

Over the last week we introduced you to Craig Thornton, an incredibly talented chef selected for the Lexus and Microsoft Fresh Perspectives multi-media arts project.  As we mentioned previously, 6 artists across 6 different fields were selected to participate and given 24 hours to create a new piece, sticking to the themes of “challenge”, “empower”, and “escape”.  Their creative processes were documented, and will be on full display along with their finished pieces very soon via a custom Fresh Perspectives site.  While last week we gave you clips of Craig Thornton creating to the themes of “empower” and “escape”, this week we focus on paper sculptor Jeff Nishinaka.

Jeff Nishinaka has crafted a 30-plus year career as one of the world’s most talented paper sculptor’s after discovering his love for the art form while attending UCLA.  Since that “a-ha” moment, as Jeff calls it, he has dedicated his life to the art, and has created pieces on display all over the world (One interesting fact is that Jackie Chan is the world’s biggest collector of Jeff’s work).  I spoke to Jeff about his work, his a-ha moment and more, in an interview we will be premiering soon.  To get a sense of Jeff’s approach and skill, watch this video for creating “To Reach Beyond The Horizon”.

Jeff created the piece to match the theme of “challenge”.  He talks about the piece, how it fits the theme, as well as his own desire to stay fresh in his art.  Watch it below.
