[Through My Lens] Scouting Locations
Photos by Bobby Reys
The weather in Chicago never cares what you have planned for the day, and many know that it can be 80 degrees one day and snow on the ground the next. That being said, I met up with a friend to go scouting for potential photo shoot locations even though the weather didn't cooperate with us. The day was cold and rainy, even though the previous days had been okay for Chicago standards. With no particular destination in mind, we found a spot that looked like we could use one day. The place was dark, full of grime, but was also colorful at the same time, and we were able to come away with some shots and ideas. Despite the sucky weather conditions, we were able to come away with some shots and some ideas. Here are some shots that I took that day.

Everybody is on their phone. Thousands of people everyday wear out their thumbs scrolling through photos, deciding which ones to post on Instagram. It’s so easy to do whether you’re a photographer or not; just point, shoot, choose a filter and post whatever you created. From funny duck face selfies, to breathtaking landscapes, to gritty city streets. Some use it as visual journal giving glimpses of their lives, while others have taken it to another level by creating works of art. All of us at Ruby Hornet are fans of the social media platform and decided to do a weekly series highlighting people whose Instagrams stand above the rest. Let us know in the comments section if you’d like to be featured, or let us know about some other cool Instagrams. Be sure to follow Ruby Hornet Instagram, too.
This week’s featured Instagram comes from @ilitchpeters. This photographer and designer really gives you a look at NY capturing some great images of the city. The compositions of his photos make this gallery pop out but it's the slow shutter photos that are really cool to me. When you go through his gallery it's hard not to want to go out and create your own slow shutter shots. So be sure to check out some of his photos here and head on over to his Instagram for more great shots.

Nikon announce new point and shoot camera, lens
Nikon has recently announced they are releasing a new Coolpix point and shoot camera along with a new 18-300mm f3.5-6.3g lens. The Coolpix S810c camera is a 16mp point and shot camera and comes with the latest 4.4.2 version of Android KitKat operating system. This means that a person will be able to use all of their camera apps that they might have on their Android, so you can directly upload your photos instantly to Instagram and even edit your photos using VSCO Cam all conveniently on the camera. If you're in the market for a point and shoot camera, you may want to look into it when it releases sometime in May for around $350.
Along with the Coolpix s810c, Nikon also announced a new 18-300mm lens 3.5-6.3g lens which is supposed to be 30% lighter than its predecessor. Because of the loss in weight, when the lens is fully zoomed it will lose about 1/3 of stop light, but it is built to minimize lens flare and chromatic aberration. The lens will come in at around $900, and like the Coolpix point and shoot camera, should be release sometime in May.

Move over Samsung–you’re not the only game in town trying to get further into the Android-powered camera world. Today Nikon introduced the Coolpix S810c, a 16MP point-and-shoot camera preloaded with the latest 4.4.2 version of Android KitKat.
Nikon promises the camera will let users launch all their favorite Android camera apps without the compromises of a lackluster smartphone snapper. The Coolpix S810c is equipped with a 12x optical zoom Nikkor lens, albeit with an unimpressive f3.3-6.3 variable aperture. It might not produce very shallow depth of field but the Coolpix backside illuminated CMOS sensor should make up for the lack of light coming through that somewhat narrow aperture lens. Read on for more about Nikon’s new Android camera plus the new 18-300mm lens for its DX DSLRs.
More details are after the jump.
Just like the Samsung Galaxy NX and the Galaxy Camera 2, the Coolpix S810c will be able to use Android’s full range of camera apps. This includes everyone’s favorite Instagram, VSCO and Camera Zoom FX. The camera is also backed by a massive 3.7-inch touch-screen LCD monitor with 1.2 million-dot resolution, which should make it more than decent for photo editing apps like VSCO Cam.
The Nikon Coolpix S810c will be available by early May 2014 in Black or White for a $349.95—just a little more than your high-end Android smartphone.

[Video] Adobe Brings Lightroom to iPad, but Not for Everyone
It looks like Adobe has finally unveiled an app version of Adobe Lightroom for the photographer on the go who wants the flexibility to organize, edit, and share their photos from anywhere. Adobe Lightroom Mobile lets you step away from your computer and gives you all the tools you may need to edit your photos on your iPhone or iPad. The app won't replace the desktop version, but you'll get the most commonly used adjustments like Exposure, Contrast, Saturation, Sharpening, Clarity and more to use with your smartphone photos or RAW images.
What's cool about the app is that Adobe Lightroom Mobile syncs with your desktop version, and with the use of Smart Previews, lets you edit Raw images without taking up space on your iPhone or iPad, provided you have internet connection. There is also an option to save your files offline in case you don't have access to the internet so you can still do your editing. The app sounds interesting and can prove to be quite useful, but there are some downsides as well. Even though this app is free, it's only available for Creative Cloud subscribers, and those who aren't subscribers have no way of downloading the app. You can check out the intro video below, and for more information on Adobe Lightroom Mobile, visit Adobe's official website here.

[Through My Lens] Mexico
Photos by Bobby Reys
It's been about a week since I've been back from Mexico, and I've been going through all the photos I took from all the various spots I visited. It had been awhile since I shot and edited so many photos, but since I was in a new place everyday, I knew on the flight coming back to the States that I'd have some work ahead of me. There were really a lot of photos that I wanted to share, but in the end, I decided on the ones that captured a good portion of what I saw in Mexico. There are shots from cities like San Miguel, Guanajuato, and Morelia to shots that I took in little towns that are probably not even on a map. There was some more stuff I would have liked to capture, but that might have until next time. All in all, it was a good trip, even with all of the police checkpoints when traveling between places. The weather was good, and the food was even better... which I didn't even snap one photo of.

GoPro Announces a New Software Update Alongside New Accessories
GoPro couldn't wait to release some of their new products individually, so they decided to unleash them all at the same time. They have released some new accessories and a new software update for the all the GoPro users to have new ways to shoot, edit, and share video and images. For $40 - $50, GoPro enthusiasts can choose from two new different housing units, such as the Black Housing, which is a durable black matte mount when you want to go incognito, or if you want to go smaller can opt for The Frame.
If those mounts aren't your style, GoPro also introduced the Gooseneck mount for $20. You'd think that was it, but there is one more accessory left: the $200 Dual Hero System that houses not one but two GoPro cameras if you want to dedicate one camera for images and the other for film. With all of the new accessories, you'd think GoPro would be done, but they went ahead and released new software updates as well. To make the whole GoPro experience easier, they updated their mobile app, as well as making improvements to camera HERO3+ software.
For more detailed information on all the new accessories and software updates visit the GoPro website here.

Reflecta’s Latest Film Scanner Can Digitize Your Negatives
I remember the days when we all had to purchase film to put in our camera to capture those special moments. Those days seem like so long ago as many of us have made the transition to shooting digital. I myself love film and still shoot with it from time to time because it's fun, and simply because there's a whole different feel to shooting film as opposed to digital. With digital, you get instant gratification and you know what you're going to get, and with all the sharing we do of photos these days, it's quite convenient. German based company Reflecta has made a new 35mm film scanner for those of you that still shoot film and want to share them on the web. The ProScan 10T can digitize your film negatives at 10,000 dpi with a dynamic range of 3.9 DMax that will get the most out of your film scans. As of right now, the scanner is only available in Germany and has a price tag of around the $600 dollar range, and there's no information if it will hit the international market.
