While looking up my new favorite band Free Energy, I came across an interview where they talk about a brand new band whom recently played their first ever show, BRONZE. Currently out of the backwater location of Brooklyn NY, the band is made up of Ian Menard and Charlie Davis (both previously from the Chicago band Detachment Kit) and are joined by Jess Birch and Ian MacDermut. Since I always feel awkward about trying to describe somebody’s art, I’ll quote from their press release:
“BRONZE bursts out of the gates playing boisterous rock anthems with spot on percussion and heavy hip-shaking beats. Based out of Brooklyn, NY, BRONZE follows in the musical vein of New Order and Brian Eno with the swagger of T. Rex.”
What they said. There are subversive but upbeat tones in each of these songs. “Sunny Days” and “Deep Freeze” work on opposite ends of the BRONZE spectrum. “Sunny” plays against the underlying bouncy beat in a quiet subdued manner emphasizing the vocal work in the mix. As the beat drops out, the song leaves the listener with a sense of longing as It fades to a satisfying and quiet end. “Deep Freeze” goes the opposite direction pulling the vocals back in with the other instrumentation. It gives the impression of someone struggling to overcome the background and gives the chorus a powerful quality that you want to scream along with.
Currently BRONZE is unsigned, but will hopefully be soon. I look forwarded to hearing more. Check out the tracks after the jump.
