Broad City's Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson

Broad City Girls and Paul Feig Working on Upcoming Film

Over the past couple of months, my household has become kind of Broad City central. It's rare for a day to go by where I don't, at the very least, re-watch an episode or two of stars Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer's outrageous shenanigans in New York. At a time when comedy actresses and comediennes are rising in ways they haven't before, Broad City serves as one of the pinnacles of contemporary female-centric comedy. If you don't believe me, try watching an episode or two without chuckling at Abbi's inherent awkwardness or Ilana's in-your-face comfort/confidence and the dynamics that each bring to their friendship. It was only a matter of time before the two brought their talents to the silver screen, but that day is finally upon us, and with a Hollywood heavy hitter known for spotlighting hilarious women in comedy.

Jacobson and Glazer are writing a script for their film debut with Paul Feig (SpyBridesmaids) on board to produce. As of right now, the actresses are only writing the script, but they could potentially star in the film, as well. It's also pertinent to note that the film will not be a Broad City adaptation. No other information on the film is available.

I can't stress enough: If you have yet to watch Broad City, do so and feel confident knowing the next generation of funny actresses is here.

Amazing Spider-Man

List of Rumored Spider-Man Directors Released

Spider-Man has always been a humorous character known as much for his wit as his abilities and personal motto. However, despite five films and two actors, the Spider-Man films didn't capture this pivotal aspect of the character. When Marvel Cinematic Universe mastermind Kevin Feige announced future Spider-Man films would be co-handled by Marvel Studios, he made it very apparent that the character's sense of humor would be a focal point for the films.

With the next Spider-Man film scheduled for a 2017 release, Marvel and Sony are rumored to be closing in on a director within the month. Yesterday, a purported shortlist of serious contenders for the director's chair was released, featuring directors known for their comedies.

The list includes Jonathan Levine (50/50Warm Bodies), Ted Melfi (St. Vincent), Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect), Jared Hess (Napoleon DynamiteNacho Libre), and John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein (Horrible Bosses 2, Vacation). Of the rumored names, Daley and Goldstein are my personal favorites due to their script work on Horrible BossesHorrible Bosses 2, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. However, the most interesting name is Hess, whose work post-Nacho Libre has been lacking. Neither of the rumored directors have much experience with action films, although Levine's Warm Bodies did feature some minor action scenes.

It's likely that a director will be announced around the same time the next Spider-Man/Peter Parker is cast, so expect a lot of Spider-Man-related news over the next month!

Spike Lee by Patrick McMullan Co./Rex

Casting Call for Spike Lee's Film Set for Saturday

An open casting call for extras in Spike Lee's upcoming Chicago-based film (the title of which I'm purposely ignoring) is set for this Saturday at St. Sabina Academy in Auburn Gresham. The casting call is being held by 4 Star Casting and is open for all Illinois residents aged 7 to 75 with valid State ID or driver's license. The agency is looking to hire hundreds of extras for the film's shoot from May to July.

The Facebook page for the casting call refers to the film as ChiTruth and not as its controversial moniker. Whether this is a leak of the film's new title or something else entirely is unclear. The casting call comes a few weeks after Lee met with city officials to receive a $3m tax break for the film, during which Mayor Emanuel expressed his dislike for the film's title.

Full details for the open casting call can be seen in the flyer below.

ROAR

[Trailer] ROAR

[youtube id="9RmnuHTJI9U"]

When a film is being marketed as "The Most Dangerous Film Ever Made," it's easy to assume it's a hyperbolic marketing pitch to sell the film. However, despite the outlandish claims, ROAR seriously could be considered the de facto "most dangerous film ever made." Originally released in 1981, the film has been re-released by Drafthouse Films, which specializes in genre films and cult releases. Shot over an 11-year period, the production for ROAR cost $17m and resulted in over 70 cast and crew members injured by the untrained, wild animals on set. However, no animals were harmed in the making of the film.

ROAR is about a wife and her three children visiting the family's patriarch, where he lives amongst a menagerie of wild animals. The husband and wife are played by former real-life couple Tippi Hedren and Peter Griffith (who also wrote and directed), Griffith's actual sons, and the couple's daughter, Melanie Griffith. Beyond that, I can't make sense of a plot or narrative, but I guess a film like ROAR wouldn't need one when it features actual animal attacks.

ROAR will be roaring (pardon the pun) to arthouse theaters across the country. You can find a full list of theaters here.

Mark Wahlberg in Ted 2

[Red Band Trailer] Ted 2 (NSFW)

[youtube id="8eHufVyP2gE"]

Ted was a pleasant surprise when it premiered in theaters in 2012, grossing nearly $250m worldwide and garnering decent critical reception. Beyond the critical and commercial success was writer/director Seth MacFarlane's ability to prove that his brand of humor can, in fact, translate well to the big screen. However, A Million Ways to Die in the West, MacFarlane's sophomore feature, didn't do nearly as well commercially or critically, proving that the sophomore slump is, in fact, real.

As the saying goes, third time's the charm, and if this official Red Band trailer for Ted 2 is any indication, MacFarlane and company are ready to prove themselves again. Ted 2 picks up where Ted left off with Ted (MacFarlane) and Tami-Lynn (Jessica Barth) ready to start a family. However, given Ted's status as a teddy bear, both he and John (Mark Wahlberg) must fight for his civil rights to prove that he's a living person, thanks to the help of lawyer Samantha L. Jackson (Amanda Seyfried).

The Red Band trailer shows off more of the same humor you come to expect from MacFarlane, for better or worse. There are some gems that not only push the envelope, but do so in a legitimately funny way (unlike this spring's bomb, Get Hard). Keen observers will also note that Mila Kunis' character, Lori, doesn't appear in the trailer and won't be in the film. Regardless, Ted 2 should be a hit for Seth MacFarlane fans when it comes to theaters on June 26th.
