R. Kelly: The Demo Tape Mixtape

Demo Tape

This is R. Kelly's first ever mixtape, and he told MTV that the goal was to take, "it all the way back to when I first started; all I had was my demo.  It's a way to start fresh, be humble. It's like being a new artist. This is my demo tape for my fans."

R. Kelly teamed up with DJ Drama and DJ Skee for the tape, which will serve as the precursor to his next proper LP, a project that Kelly will release as Untitled.  No, it's not in the same vein as Nas' 2008 offering, Kelly is hoping that fans name the album based on their reactions to it.  He said, "I want whoever listens to the record to call it what they want, name it themselves based on what they feel listening to the music."

Tokin Black Guy: "Turn My Music High" Video

Tokin Black Guy

Tokin' Black Guy emerged earlier this year claiming to be on G.O.O.D. Music, others took it so far to think that Tokin' was an alter ego for West himself.  Kanye denied both claims.  Whoever the Tokin' dude really is, he dropped this music video in my mailbox today for "Turn My Music High".  Check it out below.  You can download the track here.

Soulstice: "Bird's Eye View" featuring Kev Brown

Soulstice

It's great when artists send over text for their posts, makes things a lot easier and also conveys a sense of ownership over the art...whatever that means...

"I'm from Chicago, but I've lived in the DC area for several years.  Living in DC, you're so close to the politics and decision-making, but you're no more able to affect what happens than anyone else.  It raises your awareness, but also increases your level of frustration at times.  Conceptually, this song is an important piece of the "Beyond Borders" project because sometimes the best way to impact the world is to take a look at closer look at the way we do things here.  I wrote the line about needing a Black president well before Obama was elected and I'm happy to see that prophecy fulfilled.  Kev Brown, one of Maryland's finest rhymers and beatsmiths, joins me on this one...we actually recorded this joint at Kev's house."

GLC: "Spaceship" Video Full

GLC

"In the mall til 12, when my schedule had said 9, putting them pants on shelves, waiting patiently I asked myself..."

When I first heard "Spaceship" as a 21 year old senior at Indiana University (go Hoosiers), it really gave me chills.  I remember walking thru campus with my discman blaring, snow on the ground, and thinking, 'man, Kanye beat me to it.'  It's not as though I was gonna make an album or anything like that, but the whole vibe, hit me in a certain way and expressed a lot of what I was feeling at that time.  Along with school, I worked retail to pay my way, and when the first lines of "Spaceship" hit, "if my manager insults me again, I will be assaulting him..." yea, that really hit home...Anyway, I say all that to say that since that time I've been able to meet GLC, and he's become a mentor to me in music, in life, and of course in pimpin', haha...Anyway, he unleased the full video for "Spaceship" last night, I was watching the Sox get it handed to them at U.S. Cell so I couldn't post right away, but you can see the full video below.

A Day If The Life of Mikkey Halsted

Mikkey Halsted

From the man himself:

Your boy Mikkey Halsted has been in grind mode 25/8 in case you haven't noticed.  This past weekend I got it in like my old CMR days where we would be in and out of the studio, clubs, malls, dealerships and more all in the same night. Well this weekend I wasn't rolling with Mannie and Wayne it was A-Rock, J4 (4Management), KT and the UnCrowned fam. Check the video below, we started out at my crib and headed out to a photo shoot for the W.B.C. Magazine and their list of "The 25 Rappers You Should Know Already". From there we headed back South to knock off day #2 of the video shoot for "The News 2", with my guy GL Joe and the fam. Last but not least I ripped it down with the homie RTC and friends at the Division Street Festival. All I can say is with summer coming aroundd and my single "Hello" (shameless plug) taking off, I'm getting that feeling like it's '94 at the crib. So many dope M.C.'s and artists are on the scene in the Chi.

Peep the video below featuring multiple shout outs to, well, me...hahaha....
