[Album] MellowHigh: "MellowHigh"
Ever since OFWGKTA hit the scene a few years back when Tyler ate a tarantula in his over-exposed nightmare that was Bastard, Odd Future has been a staple of the modern hip-hop world. While Tyler and Earl provided the intensity and wow factor, it has always been Domo Genesis and Hodgy Beats who were recognized as the truest lyricists of the collective. Having released a couple projects as MellowHype, the pair finally teamed up with fellow OFWGKTA producer Left Brain for a full project that has been awhile in the making. True to their original name, the buzz around the album hasn't been crazy, save for a couple songs dropped on SoundCloud and the video for "Yu" which dropped earlier this month. With their latest, self-titled offering, Domo and Hodgy feel right at home over the Left Brain beats. Check out the full stream via Myspace here below along with dates for their current tour which hits Tucson, Arizona tomorrow.

Tyler, The Creator: "Look" (feat. Hodgy Beats, Domo Genesis, & Earl Sweatshirt)
The Odd Future conglomerate surprised their fans last night after releasing a new record featuring the group's best emcees --Tyler, The Creator, Hodgy Beats, Domo Genesis, & Earl Sweatshirt--. What's interesting about this record is the fact that underground emcee/producer Nottz is credited for the instrumental. Tyler is known for his lack of willingness to collaborate with people outside OFWGKTA's camp and we rarely get to see these four on a track all together, so having an "outsider" be part of their material is a rarity.

[EP] Hodgy Beats: "Untitled 2"
Odd Future's Hodgy Beats has always been considered the "lyricist" of the collective, but in his latest EP, Untitled 2, the L.A. native takes a more experimental route and relies more on melodies and spaced-out production than any other project he has put out before. The bars are definitely not lacking though, Hodgy can still spit rhymes for days, the only difference is that the concepts seem more polished throughout the seven-track EP.
Hodgy Beats: "Years"
Hodgy Beats drops something a bit different from what we're accustomed listening by him in "Years", but different is what listeners should have come to expect from Hodgy. The Odd Future members gets his philosopher on and asks the question "Where do you see yourself in a couple of years?" while letting us know his observations on society and what we're taught to become. One of my favorite joints from the spitter in recent memory, can't wait until he comes back to the Chi!
[Interview] Hodgy Beats: Find Your Own
"We collaborated on some shit today. I don't even know what it's called. Don't care. Just sounds good." And with that, our Closed Session with Hodgy Beats was finished. The Odd Future/MellowHype/MellowHigh emcee happened to come through the studio during down time in the windy city, where his Odd Future collective had a show later that night at the Vic Theater.
Hodgy was calm and relaxed throughout the session, slightly different that the Hodgy we came to know through Odd Future's live shows and music videos. While we kind of expected Hodgy to come in, bounce off the walls, and take over the space, he instead grabbed a spot on the couch and methodically listened to production from Thelonious Martin. With Left Brain beside him, Hodgy found his beat, and went to work.
After cooking up a nice new joint with Thelonious, Hodgy sat down with me for a new interview. Here he talks about his need to constantly be create, the value he places on originality, his adjustment to fame, and of course, MellowHype's sophomore LP, Numbers, which released shortly after this interview took place.
