Vogue's Keeping Up with Kimye Controversy

Photos by Annie Leibovitz

In the latest pop culture news, it's been hard to avoid Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's current controversy as they grace Vogue Magazine's April 2014 cover, including an exclusive family editorial spread. Although the magazine print doesn't actually hit stands until March 31st, there was a total social media uproar over Vogue's decision to feature what they hashtagged: #worldsmosttalkedaboutcouple. And even though the photos were shot by well respected celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz, it seems celebrities and subscribers alike addressed more negative feedback than positive. Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour even had to put out a statement defending her decision and even debunked accusations that Kanye paid her to do the feature.

All in all let's face the facts, Vogue is still going to sell copies, and will probably have one of it's more successful month's because of the controversy. Also, whether anyone likes it or not, the couple proves to be some of the most influential people in the fashion industry, and the issue emphasizes that. It's even profiled by famed fashion writer Hamish Bowles outlining Kim's fashion influences as she searches for the perfect wedding dress. Let's also not forget that it's refreshing to see an interracial couple on Vogue's cover, period. For the most part, the cover is typically seen with elegant, pretty, skinny, white actresses, and there's nothing wrong with that. However, let us remind you that the last time a black man was put on its cover, it was in reference to King Kong. And even if this is a colossal misstep on Vogue’s part, for Kim and Kanye, it’s just another round of media attention, and exactly what they set out to do. So who do you think wins out in all of this?

Check out some of recently leaked photos and tell us what you think. Also take a look at their full behind-the-scenes video feature. To read the full article from the April issue, get it at newsstands March 31st or download the digital edition, and check out more photos here.

SXSW 2014 by Kristen Wrzesniewski

[SXSW] Music Festival 2014 Recap

In 1977, a water skiing Henry Winkler wore a leather coat and life preserver and attempted to 'jump the shark' in a move that become synonymous with the beginning of the end of a good thing. In that regard it was the long-running "Happy Days" sitcom. Last week in Austin, Texas, it was the South by Southwest Music conference that took the leap from humble beginnings to corporate cash in it's own rendition of 'jumping the shark'. No one pointed it out better than TDE-signee and Oxymoron artist Schoolboy Q, who interrupted his set at the Complex House several times to address several SXSW sets he played for 'yuppies' while his real fans stood outside unable to get in. Alas, the 2014 edition of SXSW couldn't have been described better. An armful of wristbands, garnered through careful planning and RSVPs was instantly trumped by a litany of barriers between them and the artists they had traveled to see. When it began in 1987, the festival was a place for new and unsigned artists to get recognized and for true fans to catch them before they hit the big time. Today, to put it the words of my Journalism professor, it is essentially 'one big blow job'. Despite a lack of a real industry, or perhaps because of it, record labels funnel top-tier artists to the highest bidders, who more often than not come with long guest lists that leave fans sitting outside wondering where all the public transportation in this 'city' is. Even the Illmore, the exclusive house party that has become a staple of the fest, running late into the night with star-studded performance, seemed a bit too big this year in it's new home at a sterile youth center.

For me, the best part of the week was living vicariously as if the SXSW Schoolboy Q encountered was somewhere else. I hustled interviews with true rising acts in Philadelphia-based Cheers Elephant, who's onstage presence is obviously culled from years of performing together and who I'm sure saw a significant boost afterwards, The Tontons, a Houston indie/soul group with a personality to match that hit SXSW on the heels of their latest project, the well received Make Out King and Other Stories of Love. Then there was Radkey, the trio of young brothers, aged 16, 18 and 20 respectively who single-handedly got me back into punk rock with one of the wildest, most raw sets I have seen in a long time, and 17-year-old Bishop Nehru who very well may be the second coming of Nas, The Lonely Biscuits, a band of Belmont University students who stopped down to ATX between projects and mid-terms. They weren't a sit down with Rick Ross, or an in-depth on Phantogram, but the stories I was able to dig up throughout my time at SXSW made me proud to be able to say I saw through the thick haze of bullshit and gerrymandering that descends on the city for a week and actually seek out acts that benefited from the experience.

To be sure, it was two Chicago artists who not only embodied all that SXSW should be, but capitalized on it to continue their independent, organic rises out of their hometown. A year ago, Chance The Rapper ran around SXSW playing sets in anticipation of his yet-to-be-released album, Acid Rap that turned 2013 into a roller coaster of experiences for the 20-year-old MC. At that time, Vic Mensa was still performing as part of the band Kids These Days, which broke up soon after Chance dropped his project on April 30. The two close friends arrived again in Austin at wildly different points in their careers. Chance, with just about every accolade possible under his belt is becoming the biggest independent artist in recent memory, while Mensa, fresh off a plane from Norway, put on a marathon of sets throughout the week that had crowds buzzing in the street about the kid from the Midwest with the funky, different flow to him. Chance's only show was cut short by Fire Marshalls, an ode to his popularity and a crux of the festival at large while also picking up a Woodie award with Austin Vesely for the "Everybody's Something" video. As independent, self-funded artists, Chance and Vic may have embodied the spirit of what SXSW is supposed to be better than anyone else in Austin this week.

In 1977, Fonzie made history by ruining a good thing while ten feet in the air on water skis, in 2014 Lady Gaga did the same by performing beneath a carefully-placed canopy of Doritos bags. Corporate money has always been prevalent (early 2000s 'ringtone rap), and it's just another chapter in the money making something so genuine so utterly unrecognizable.

[Songs of the Day] 3/5/14 (Feat. JODY, Big Sean, Leather Corduroys & More)

Wednesday brought about more music, and it's all here for you to enjoy. Big Sean got quite a canvas from which to spit as Kanye West and DJ Mustard teamed up on the production side for "Sanctified", a soul-entrenched sample piece that has everyone's distinct skills on display. The talented duo of SaveMoney rappers Kami De Chukwu and Joey Purp dropped a new track, "Dat Strong" as their alias Leather Corduroys (what is hotter than a pair of leather corduroys?) which premiered on Fader. PARTYNEXTDOOR got a remix of his song "R A I N" by Rochelle JOrdanBig K.R.I.T. continued to stream out new music, this time linking up with A$AP Ferg for "Lac Lac" which dropped on Rap Radar earlier and BADBADNOTGOOD offered up a new one in "Can't Leave The Night". JODY dropped a gem in their latest single, "M.I.A" and Freddie Carrera teamed up with Taylor Bennett for a new one in "20 More".

Track of the Day: Jody: "M.I.A"

Big Sean: "Sanctified"

Freddie Carrera: "20 More" (Feat. Taylor Bennett)

Photo of Kanye West on his Yeezus Tour

[Trailer] Yeezus

I admit, I saw this "trailer" yesterday and thought really hard about posting it. Yeah, it's Kanye West, arguably one of the biggest music icons of this generation, but then again... it's Kanye West. Ultimately, I opted not to, not out of any prejudices against Kanye (I love the man and everything he does), but simply because I couldn't find a proper embed code for the trailer. I've spent the last hour watching and re-watching this purported trailer, and it has me wondering exactly what this film "directed by Hype Williams coming to theaters" really is, and what it would mean for Kanye's never-ending quest for artistic expression.

Last week, we reported American Psycho's Bret Easton Ellis's involvement on a film for Kanye. Could this Yeezus trailer be the same project? Probably. Now then, exactly what Yeezus will be is the real question. From my initial reactions, it seemed that Yeezus would just be a glorified concert movie a la Never Say Never. However, knowing Kanye and his taste for the grandiose, it could be that Yeezus will be so much more than a collection of Yeezus Tour clips.

Remember, when My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was released, it was paired with the Runaway short film, which itself served as a visual supplement to the album, but was otherwise a long, glorified medley. However, in saying that, I absolutely loved some of the "chapters" found in the short. Yeezus, then, could be an expansion of the Runaway experiment, and with two talented artists in Hype Williams and Bret Easton Ellis involved, it could be Kanye's first real step in a successful future in cinema.

...or it could be a completely convoluted mess. As all things with Kanye, there's nothing but extremes with no middle ground. Here's hoping that the register will tilt towards positive.

[Video] Kanye West Appears on 'Late Night with Seth Myers'

Kanye West, with his Yeezus tour finally over and some time on his hands, decided to stop by Seth Myers' new show and help him continue to break into the late night circuit by stopping by to chat about the extravagant tour, get some baby news out of the way and clear the stage for the real show, which came after the brief back and forth between the husband of Kim Kardashian and the former 'Saturday Night Live' cast member who took over for Jimmy Fallon in the late night spot after the Jay Leno domino finally fell, opening the lines of succession. Kanye performed what became a career-spanning set that touched on his hits from the entirety of his catalogue, begininning with "Jesus Walks", "Touch The Sky" and "Stronger" before making his way through the dark 808s & Heartbreaks days, even live auto-tuning "Heartless" and continuing on to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and beyond, wrapping things up with a rousing rendition of "Black Skinhead" to wrap things up. American Psycho's Bret Easton Ellis Writes Movie For Kanye West

Writer of the popular novel American Psycho Bret Easton Ellis seems to have an appreciation for the obscure, but a recent collaboration request from awhile back was something that he finally considered. According to Ellis, Kanye West has been approaching the writer more than a few times to write up a screenplay for him.

The seemingly odd film partnership came up in Ellis's recent interview with Vice magazine.

"[Kanye] came and asked me to write the film. I didn’t want to at first. Then I listened to Yeezus. It was early summer last year and I was driving in my car. He’d given me an advance copy, and I thought, regardless of whether I’m right for this project, I want to work with whoever made this. So fuck it, I said yes. And that’s how it happened. That was seven or eight months ago. We’ll see what happens."

Bret Easton Ellis and Kanye West may appear to be a random pairing. However, between Kanye's stunts with the media  and Ellis's infamous creation of a psychopath that everyone enjoys, I think that the collaboration between these two controversially creative men could quite possibly have some potential as long as Kanye doesn't repeat his semi-awful impromptu performance at the end of Anchorman 2.

The date for the film has yet to be set. When asked about the production of the project, Ellis responded, "It’s in Kanye Land, and that’s subject to a whole other time frame."

There was a huge influx of new music over the weekend, and we're here to round it all up, organize it, and make it a little easier to sift through it all. Unless your head has been firmly buried in sand somewhere, you may have heard Beyonce dropped an unexpected album, the lead single of which ("Drunk In Love") has been burning up the radio waves and Internet. Everyone and their mother seemed to get on a remix of the Jay Z/Beyonce track as Diplo, Kanye West, T.I. & The Weeknd all highlighted a heavy dose of Bey. Weathering the "Drunk In Love" storm was Canadian product and OVO signne PARTYNEXTDOOR, who dropped off a new song in "Persian Rugs" and Trinidad Jame$, who celebrated Valentine's Day the way only he can, with a new record in "EtheREAL". Jeremih & Shlomo's latest track, "No More" got a remix from Boots and some EDM from Jr. Hi, who got Childish Gambino on "Trillion Girls" and Ellie Goulding who unveiled a new Skrillex track on her latest mix for BBC Radio 1. Kanye West made the list twice, with producer Hudson Mohawke leaking the original cut of "Bound 2" featuring Tyler, The Creator in Leeds over the weekend, Big Boi continued his series of "Mash-Up Mondays" with a new track in "Damaged World Mash-Up" which comes complete with animated visuals and Trash Talk & Flatbush Zombies got together for "97.92". MTVU Woodie Awards

2014 MTV Woodie Award Nominees Announced

The MTV Woodies, the cable channel's reaction to indie music, announced the nominees for this year's award show, chosen by voters online yesterday. The nominees included a who's who of artists and acts that dominated the up and coming charts in 2013. In the hunt for the coveted "Woodie of the Year" are familiar names in Kanye West, Drake and Pharrell, as well as some more eclectic choices in Disclosure, Imagine Dragons, Lorde and Zedd. Chance The Rapper and director Austin Vesely are nominated for the "Best Video Woodie" for the "Everybody's Something" video. They will be up against some stiff competition from Disclosure ("Grab Her"), Passion Pit ("Carried Away"), Iggy Azalea ("Bounce") and Arcade Fire ("Afterlife").  Chance pops up again for his collaboration on "Life Round Here" with James Blake and Jhene Aiko and Mack Wilds round out a fairly solid list for "Breaking Woodie". Honestly, it's odd to find names like Beyonce and Jay Z on this list of nominees, which seem more tailored to Macklemore than the Grammys did a few weeks ago. Bob Dylan is nominated for a "Did It My Way Woodie". What's more 'My Way' than releasing an album (The Heist, Acid Rap) independently only to see it beat out the big guys? The line between independent and mainstream is being increasingly scrubbed away, and the 2014 edition of the Woodie Awards may be the best implication of that.

The MTV Woodies take place March 13 in Austin, TX, and will air March 16 on MTVU. Check out the full list of nominees below.
