Small Sample of Mondo Gallery's Batman 75 Posters
2014 marks Batman's 75th anniversary. Over its near century-long existence, Batman has experienced so many stylistic changes, tonal shifts, friends, enemies, allies, villains, costumes, and more from its roots as a detective book to the campiness of the '60s show to the dark film revival over the past decade. Through it all, there are many Batboys and Batgirls dedicated to Bruce Wayne and his countless attempts to protect Gotham from evil. Whether you're a fan of the comics, the TV show, the cartoons, the films, or simply just like grown men dressing up as bats, Batman is one of the first characters that come to mind when somebody mentions superheroes.
To commemorate the franchise's 75th anniversary, Mondo Gallery in Austin, TX has an exhibition running from now until November 15th entitled Batman 75. I absolutely love Mondo posters (as I've illustrated most recently with Mike Mitchell's Marvel work), and the collection Mondo has curated for its Batman 75 show doesn't disappoint. If you're in Austin, I highly recommend checking out the show. However, if you're unable to attend, I've included some of the posters being displayed at the show below. You can visit /Film for the full selection of posters.

Mondo Announces Mike Mitchell x Marvel x Mondo Art Show
Keen readers will remember that one of my very first posts on Ruby Hornet was on a Mondo Gallery show that artist Mike Mitchell had last spring. The show featured Mitchell's color-filled portraits of various film characters, including Pulp Fiction's Mr. Pink, Oldboy's Oh Dae-Su, Drive's Driver, and more. The artist and Mondo have teamed up once again for a new show that will focus on the marvelous side of comic books: Marvel.
The new show, entitled "Mike Mitchell x Marvel x Mondo," will run from April 25th until May 17th, with a special opening night event on April 25th from 7pm - 10pm with Mitchell himself in attendance. The pieces, some of which can be seen below, will highlight some of Marvel's iconic characters, like Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus, alongside lesser known figures, including Bullseye and Power Man-era Luke Cage. Considering Marvel's growing stable of film properties (let alone the rising portfolio of Sony and Fox owned Marvel film properties), it's only a matter of time before lesser-known characters like MODOK, Iron Fist, and Nova are plastered onto underwear, shirts, and billboards everywhere with The Avengers and X-Men.
Some of the pieces will also be available for sale at the show in limited quantities for $60 each. You can find the list for the available pieces below. If you do attend the "Mike Mitchell x Marvel x Mondo" show, let us know how it is!
Limited edition Man of Steel posters from Mondo on sale this week
As some readers might remember from my first few posts on Ruby Hornet, I'm a huge fan of poster art designs. Unfortunately, the art of poster art has been overlooked and underused. Take, for example, a recent trend in Hollywood films with single characters juxtaposed against an expansive, barren backdrop; the first examples that come to mind are The Dark Knight, Inception, and Star Wars Into Darkness. Luckily, there are people who champion for creative, innovative poster designs. The people at Mondo do everything they can to ensure proper entertainment art design won't go away. Their gallery in Austin is always holding special exhibitions showcasing all types of art, such as their recent Mike Mitchell showcase. They also go out of their way to release special limited edition posters timed with various releases.
This week, Superman's return in Man of Steel is getting the Mondo treatment. Mondo will be releasing two limited edition posters this week to commemorate the superhero's theatrical return. The first poster is an illustration by artist Ken Taylor. The regular version of the poster is in a soft, sepia tone that fits with the overall nostalgic theme of the illustration. However, my personal favorite is the cool-colored variant that sticks true to Superman's blue and red color motif. The second poster by Martin Ansin is inspired by the vintage era of Superman. While the regular poster is in full color, the variant will be cast in metal. Whether that means it'll simply be covered in foil or a full-on metal cast is unknown.
Details on the quantity, price, and availability of each piece are below. You can also check out the Mondo website for more complete information on the two amazing posters.
