Pitchfork Music Festival steadily maintains its reputation as one of Chicago’s most multifaceted music festivals of the summer. It attracts an audience from both near and far, fostering the fraternization of attendees that include bros, hipsters, middle-aged fathers, and children under the age of 7. I was able to go and rep Ruby Hornet with Bryan Lamb on Days 1 and 3 while Brynn Bixby covered Day 2. Together, we visited the set of Isaiah Rashad, SZA, DJ Spinn, Treated Crew, Beck, ScHoolboy Q, Kendrick Lamar, and many more. You can find the full set of photos on the last page!

The Beatles

Ron Howard Is Directing The Beatles Official Documentary

Ron Howard is no stranger to music documentaries, especially with last week's release of the Jay Z documentary, Made in America. It's somewhat fitting, then, that the storied actor/director/producer would turn his sights from one of the most influential rappers to the most influential band in history, The Beatles. With full support from Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono, and Olivia Harrison, Howard will be directing the official documentary on The Fab Four. The currently untitled documentary will feature 12 to 20 songs from The Beatles' catalog, fan-submitted videos, and more; the doc will also take a look at the band's history and their impact on culture. No date has been set, but a 2015 release is targeted.

In a statement released by Howard, the director had this to say about the project:

I am excited and honored to be working with Apple and the White Horse team on this astounding story of these four young men who stormed the world in 1964. Their impact on popular culture and the human experience cannot be exaggerated.

Considering how huge The Beatles still are these days (hey Shawn and Blake!), it was only a matter of time before an "official" documentary on the band was produced. Thankfully, it's in the very capable hands of Ron Howard, so the film's quality should be very high and treated with utmost respect. Now, it's only a matter of time before an official documentary on The Monkees is released...

Piece of Cake:

[Video] Piece of Cake: "Somebody"

Chicago-based duo Piece of Cake is planning to drop their EP this fall, and have recently debuted their video single “Somebody”. Piece of Cake consists of Brynn Bixby on vocals and piano and Mark Alletag on keys, collaborating to produce a soulful track that juxtaposes the doubt and reclusion sequestered in the coldest of seasons with human strength and resilience.

The combination of Brynn’s striking red hair and her soothing vocals, along with visuals of crisp white snow, provide for a serene depiction of a season that to many is anything but. The video is “Piece of Cake” sweet, but sprinkled with toppings ranging from loneliness and insecurity. Eat your heart out down below, and keep a look out for the duo’s EP later this year.

Film still of Andre Benjamin in Jimi: All Is by My Side

[Trailer] Jimi: All Is by My Side

[youtube id="S-KPOxqMazI"]

There was a period of time where the Jimi Hendrix biopic, Jimi: All Is by My Side, didn't look like it would ever get released. Outside of production problems, Hendrix's music wasn't cleared for use, which is typically a death knell for a biopic depicting a musician's life. However, writer/director John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) was able to work around this by making the focus of Hendrix's life during 1966-1967 as he began his rise as a musician following his meeting with Linda Keith (Imogen Poots), Keith Richards' girlfriend at the time.

However, the film's biggest draw is OutKast's Andre Benjamin in the starring role portraying Hendrix. The casting was near perfect, and while reception for the film as a whole has been somewhat lukewarm, Benjamin's performance has been praised. Jimi: All Is by My Side will be released in theaters on September 26th. You can read the film's official synopsis below.

OutKast’s André Benjamin stars as Jimi Hendrix in this revealing biopic from Academy Award-winning writer-director John Ridley (12 Years A Slave). Covering a year in Hendrix’s life from 1966-67 as an unknown backup guitarist playing New York’s Cheetah Club to making his mark in London’s music scene up until his Monterey Pop triumph, the film presents an intimate portrait of the sensitive young musician on the verge of becoming a rock legend.

Lollapalooza Crowd Shot by Ashley Garmon

Lollapalooza Introduces Lolla Cash, a Digital Way to Make Payments

Crowds are the absolute worst at music festivals. What's more annoying than being stuck in a crowd of screaming, drunk people? Being stuck in a crowd of screaming, drunk people while waiting in line to purchase something. Usually, lines are so long because people have to fuss with wallets or purses to find their credit cards or cash, then you have to swipe and sign or get change for your bills, and it's just a time-consuming, tedious process that most festival goers must go through if they want some food or drinks. However, C3 Presents, Lollapalooza's promoters, want to revolutionize the festival experience with a new initiative.

Referred to as Lolla Cash, the initiative involves implementing a chip within the Lollapalooza wristbands that can be used to purchase food and drinks from vendors. Lolla attendees simply have to register a credit card with their wristbands to take part in the Lolla Cash program. If all goes accordingly, it should help expedite the process at vendor stands while also ensuring attendees won't lose their wallets along the way. The wristbands use radio frequency identification (RFID) similar to how Ventra cards work, and considering how rough the CTA's new system launch was, there are bound to be bumps in the road for Lollapalooza this year. The wristbands will also store purchase information in case a clear signal can't be made at the moment of purchase to ensure transactions go through properly.

Lolla Cash represents the festival's full embrace of new technology that could find use amongst other major music festivals like South by Southwest, Electronic Daisy Carnival, Bonnaroo, and more. Disney launched a similar initiative last year, My Magic+, that allowed visitors to use their bracelets to make purchases, access their hotel rooms, fast entry into amusement and water parks, and more. It's only a matter of time before we go completely cashless in all areas of our lives.

For now, tell us what you think about Lolla Cash, and if you're going, will you actively use it?

[RH Photos] No Color at Insit Studios (6/21/2014)

Photos by Jessi Grant

This is the first in a series of two pieces by Contributing Writer Jessi Grant exploring No Color, a new campaign dedicated to creating a foundation of diversity and positivity within the Chicago arts and creative scene.

After a tiring night of waiting tables, I made my way to Bronzeville to cover No Color's pioneering event. Upon entering Insit Studios sometime after 11pm, I was greeted by the beats of DJ Al Cheeks and the poetic words of one of the event's attendees. The crowd stood close and attentive, some waiting eagerly to step up to the mic. I became quickly enchanted by the contagious energy of the room, leaving behind my post-work fatigue.

Established by long-time friends Vee Miyagi and Steven Reaves, No Color is a campaign with the ultimate goal to unite artists from diverse backgrounds to do positive work for the community while reducing racial tensions within the arts. In order to meet their ambitions, the campaign plans to maneuver throughout various communities of Chicago using all forms of art and creativity as its driving force. Miyagi decided to house their first event at Insit Studios after gaining the support of owner Koto and learning about the charitable work his establishment has done for the Bronzeville neighborhood.

Koto hosted the June 21 event alongside Frankie Robinson of Power 92.3. The event opened by engaging attendants in the filming of a TV pilot In The Loop, a production of Chicago's 2 Guys on the Reel. Shortly after, musical performers took to the mic including Ace League, Freaky Dray, and event organizers Vee Miyagi, Reggie Ruler, Illiad, and Steven Reaves (going by his stage name King Reaves). Featured Jamla Records artist Add-2 performed the longest set of the evening with drummer Donte Webb aka Tay Sticks. The performance portion of the evening also allowed time for an impromptu cypher led by artists in attendance.

After the performances, the space remained open for attendees to connect with one another and view the artwork adorning the walls. Osei Agyeman-Badu, a featured artist in the gallery space, conducted a live example of Pyrography, a practice in which the artist uses a small torch and other various instruments to burn wood in order to create portraits. Throughout the duration of the evening,  Badu worked on a piece depicting Malcom X. Additional depictions of other leaders and well-known artists in the Black community, including Erykah Badu and Nelson Mandela, sparked admiration and discussion among No Color's guests.

Originally intending to exist in the event as a spectator, I ended up having several engaging conversations with both the event organizers and attendees. I felt part of both the space and community of artists and inspired minds within. From my own experiences and those I observed in my surroundings, it was clear that No Color succeeded in building a community based on honest, meaningful, and supportive connections. A portion of the event's proceeds will go to The Center for New Horizons, a non-profit organization assisting children, youth, and families in Bronzeville and Riverdale.
