[Video] RETROSPECT: "Always"

Summertime Chi is a wonderful thing - the weather is gorgeous, there are street festivals practically every weekend, rooftop parties highlight every evening, the homies are always around, and girls, girls, girls. Directed by Def Poet/Adebowale Adesuyi, RETROSPECT's latest video from their amazing mixtape The Breakout: Part One is finally public after a private viewing party a couple of weeks ago. "Always" captures what makes Chicago summers so amazing, complete with all of the aforementioned shenanigans (shouts out to ShowYouSuck and Auggie the 9th) with some other summer staples, including Emporium, the beach, and a nighttime carnival.

Debo's music videos always follow a light narrative to frame the music like a short film, and he's honestly one of my favorite music video directors in Chicago right now. Besides the obvious stuff, like shooting the song's theme via a "Day in the Life" of RETROSPECT's circle, there's a cool parallel between the video's intro focused on Quotes (I'm digging the PI flag in the corner) to Def Poet's mirrored ending. It's always the little things that separate us.

Check out the video for "Always" below, download The Breakout: Part One if you haven't already, and check out RETROSPECT's brand new website.

[Video] PYYRAMIDS: "Invisible Scream"

Thanks in large-part to their loyal fans,  Drea Smith and Tim Norwind have been able to put out an incredible debut album, perform shows all over the world and even perform on national TV under their group moniker, PYYRAMIDS. Today is a big day for the duo as they will not only headline a concert in London, but also promote their brand new video for "Invisible Scream." The visual premiered today via Clash Magazine and perfectly accompanies the slow-down tempo of the song with a black-and-white shooting style. PYYRAMIDS is hoping their listeners will enjoy the recent material and keep supporting them as they help take care of those who helped them by pledging over at Pledge Music.

[Video] ABBY: "Monsters"

Berlin band ABBY teamed up with animator Pooya Abbasian to create a music video for "Monsters" off of their most recent album, Friends and Enemies. "Monsters" is about the narrator seeing the monsters in his life. The video takes this theme literally, creating a fictional world where a girl literally sees the physical manifestations of her paranoia and nightmares pervade her reality. The black and white music video is visually similar to the stop-motion studio Laika (CoralineParaNorman) with the smooth movements of the video's characters and long, slender figures reminiscent of Coraline, specifically. I'm a sucker for short films, music videos that might as well be short films, and animation - this "Monsters" video fit all three perfectly.

If you're digging ABBY, you can listen to more of their stuff on Soundcloud and/or purchase Friends and Enemies on iTunes.

[Video] Infinity Shred: "Mapper"

The music video for chiptune/electronic band Infinity Shred's "Mapper" from their latest album, Sanctuary, was recently premiered on The Verge. Written, edited, and directed by Dean C. Marcial (of Brooklyn film studio, Calavera), the video re-appropriates Marcial's short film, Darkmatter, mixed in with the band's song. The narrative follows two astronauts on a surreal journey after their rocket blows up in space. "Mapper" is filtered through a '70s-esque lens with Soviet Union font displayed throughout the film, creating this psuedo-retro space story that perfectly fits the band's post-rock influenced chiptune sound. Watch the video below and pick up Infinity Shred's Sanctuary if you're feeling it.
