Photographer Kieran Kesner's Photos of Ukraine
While the tumultuous tension across Ukraine has died down a bit over the summer, we all remember the unease that splintered the country during the first half of 2014. New York-based photographer Kieran Kesner was on location to capture some of the tension and unease across Ukraine, capturing photos from both protests and personal portraits of various Ukrainian citizens. I've selected a few from his series for the gallery below, but you can find the complete series and an exclusive interview with Dazed here.

Bill Murray Supports an All-Female Ghostbusters Reboot
Despite the lack of activity over the years, I always felt confident that Ghostbusters 3 would eventually be made. However, with Harold Ramis' untimely departure earlier this year (and Bill Murray's continued disinterest in the sequel), those hopes have all but been dashed. With that said, there were rumors that Paul Feig (Freaks and Geeks, Bridesmaids) would take over the director's chair from Ivan Reitman. While nothing official has been announced, more information came out that if Feig did take on Ghostbusters 3, he would introduce an all-female cast of Ghostbusters that would function more like a reboot and not a sequel.
This past weekend during Toronto International Film Festival's special "Bill Murray Day," the actor himself spoke out about the all-female Ghostbusters rumors, offering his own opinion and even cast suggestions:
It sounds great to me. It sounds as good an idea as any other! There are a lot of women that could scare off any kind of vapor! No, it’s a grand idea, I don’t know who they’re talking about, but it’s a good idea, I would watch it! I mean, I love Robert Palmer’s videos, so why wouldn’t I love the female Ghostbusters? [...] Melissa would be a spectacular Ghostbuster. And Kristen Wiig is so funny — God, she’s funny! I like this girl Linda Cardellini a lot. And Emma Stone is funny. There are some funny girls out there.
McCarthy has been at the forefront of female-driven comedies as of late with The Heat, Tammy, Identity Thief having been released over the past year. Wiig's also been building her stock up alongside McCarthy with Bridesmaids, SNL, and The Skeleton Twins only being a small sample of her filmography recently. Cardellini and Feig have a working history together as the former starred as Lindsay Weir on Freaks and Geeks and was most recently seen on New Girl. Stone, obviously, is part of the new rising talent of young actresses in Hollywood, starring in Superbad, Zombieland, and the The Amazing Spider-Man films.
Who would you want cast into an all-female Ghostbusters film?

Riot Fest Chicago 2014 Set Times Available
A week before Riot Fest's 10th Anniversary, the weekend's full set times have been released. Much like last year's Riot Fest (read our Day 1, Day 2, and Day 3 recaps!), there aren't many scheduling conflicts on my tentative schedule. I'll go into more detail on my "Top Artists to See at Riot Fest 2014" list next week, but I'm feeling really excited about this year's lineup. Shadow of the Colossus Replaces Josh Trank with Mama Director
Shadow of the Colossus is one of the most critically-acclaimed PlayStation 2 games of all-time and serves as one of the main examples in the "Games as Art" debate that has been raging on for years. For five years, Sony has been planning a film adaptation of the game, but much like the game's follow-up, The Last Guardian, not much in the way of information has been brought up since the announcement. At one point, Chronicle director Josh Trank was attached to direct the film. However, with his focus being drawn elsewhere (re: Fantastic Four), Sony has had to replace the director.
Their search has resulted in the hiring of Andres Muschietti, director of last year's horror film, Mama. That film's use of psychological horror and CGI scares would somewhat fit Shadow of the Colossus's tone, if utilized correctly. I've always seen any film adaptation of Shadow of the Colossus to follow a quiet, cerebral narrative with scenes of grandiose, larger than life CGI/live-action fight scenes. Given that Mama was Muschietti's first film, I don't know what type of vision he'll be able to craft. However, one of the film's producers had this to say about Muschietti and his love of the game:
“We knew we had our director once we heard Andy’s take on the material – it was genius. The themes, characters and supernatural elements of the story have incredible international appeal with fans of the game in the millions.”
For those unfamiliar with Shadow of the Colossus, the game follows Wander as he sets out to defeat 16 colossi in exchange for his partner Mono's life. However, every time he kills a colossus, he loses a part of his own soul.

FILMography Photo Project Juxtaposes Film Scenes with Real-Life Locations
Christopher Moloney's on-going project, FILMography, finds the photographer and film buff traveling across the world to photograph the real-life locations of various film scenes. That's fun and all, right? But what Moloney does to go the extra mile is print out stills from various films and juxtaposes them with a photo of the site he shoots. Moloney's journey so far has found him traveling to Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and even across the pond in Rome, Naples, and other locations. Check out some of my personal favorite shots from FILMography below, and follow along with the project on Moloney's FILMography Tumblr.

The Hateful Eight to Open in 70mm, Scheduled for Fall 2015 Release
Quentin Tarantino's next film, The Hateful Eight, has already had so much controversy surrounding it despite production not even beginning. There was the full script leak that happened early in the year, Tarantino's subsequent lawsuit with Gawker over the leak, the live table read of the script with some Tarantino staples, rumors of the production re-entering shooting after cancellation, and the film's official teaser trailer exclusively to Sin City: A Dame to Kill For theatrical screenings. Finally, we have some concrete information for the film that'll not only appease Tarantino fans, but cinephiles as a whole.
Production on The Hateful Eight is confirmed to begin in early 2015 with a targeted fall 2015 release date. What's more, the film will be shot in 70mm and will initially be released into theaters in the format before spreading out to more theaters in 35mm and DCP formats. For those unfamiliar, 70mm film offers a higher range of quality than the typical 35mm film stock does. I wrote a bit about Interstellar last year and how it could be the last major 70mm film release, but The Hateful Eight could hold that distinction.
Whatever format the film is released in, I know film audiences of all kinds will be glad to re-enter Tarantino's blissfully grandiose cinematic world once again.

[Weekend Box Office] Guardians of the Galaxy is Top-Grossing Film of the Year
Thanks to a strong Labor Day holiday weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy became the top-grossing domestic film of the year, out-grossing Captain America: The Winter Soldier $274.6m to $259.8m. As I've noted multiple times in the past, Guardians of the Galaxy was seen as a huge risk for Marvel Studios due to the general unfamiliarity with the characters, the film's different tone when compared to the rest of the Marvel films, and a strict focus on sci-fi. However, all's well that ends well, and as a fan of Marvel and the Marvel films, it's great that the studio's success continues strongly.
This weekend's wide releases, As Above, So Below and The November Man performed poorly, only grossing $8.3m and $7.6m to come in 4th and 6th, respectively. I had high hopes for the Pierce Brosnan-led spy thriller The November Man, but poor reviews unfortunately buried the film right out of the gate. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stayed strong in 2nd with an $11.75m take for the weekend, the Chloe Grace Moretz-starring If I Stay rounded out the Top 3 with $9.2m, and the cop comedy Let's Be Cops placed in 5th with $8.2m.
You can check out the weekend's full box office numbers below.
1. Guardians of the Galaxy - $16,313,000
2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - $11,750,000
3. If I Stay - $9,260,000
4. As Above, So Below - $8,342,400
5. Let's Be Cops - $8,200,000
6. The November Man - $7,660,000
7. When the Game Stands Tall - $5,650,000
8. The Giver - $5,253,000
9. The Hundred-Foot Journey - $4,603,000
10. The Expendables 3 - $3,500,000
