Marvel's Daredevil Finds Its Elektra In Elodie Yung

Marvel have announced the casting of French-Cambodian actress Élodie Yung as Elektra in the upcoming second season of Daredevil on Netflix. Yung is well versed in the action genre, having played Jinx, a ninja, in 2013's hopeless G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Marvel's Jeph Loeb described Yung as 'the perfect actress to embody both Elektra’s impressive and deadly physicality, as well as her psychological complexity. Paired with Charlie as Matt Murdock, the two will bring one of the most beloved and tumultuous comic book relationships to life with all the accompanying sparks and spectacular action sequences the show is known for.'

There will likely be some curiosity over whether Yung's interpretation of the character will see some changes to her history. In the comics, Elektra is a Greek woman who trains in martial arts following the deaths of her parents. She shares a mentor with Matt Murdock in the shape of Stick, played by Scott Glenn in the series, despite her later choosing to ally herself with The Hand, a sect of ninja assassins who have been hinted at as a long-term threat. Given Yung's heritage, it is also possible her Elektra will be linked in some capacity to Nobu, a ninja-turned-businessman who, prior to his fiery death at Murdock's hands, was allied to both Wilson Fisk and a clan with a strong resemblance to The Hand. That's strictly speculation, but with Jon Bernthal also joining the series as Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, there will be no shortage of fan favourites in play when the series returns in 2016.

Orange is the New Black

Netflix Testing Teasers Before and After TV Shows

Of all of the benefits Netflix offers over other services is their refusal to implement third-party ads. While the price of subscription has changed a bit over the years (and is perhaps facing another upcharge imminently), their dedication to bringing amazing content to their subscribers, both original programming and licensed shows/films, is well worth weathering an extra buck or two, especially when we can binge-watch Scrubs (like what my roommates and I currently do) or Orange is the New Black (like what my roommates and I will do soon) uninterrupted.

However, Netflix has recently begun testing pre-roll and post-roll teasers for their Netflix original shows for certain users/markets. While the next logical conclusion would be the introduction of third-party ads a la Hulu, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings took a very clear stance yesterday following speculation that the aforementioned teasers were paving the way for ads in the future, sharing on Facebook: "No advertising coming onto Netflix. Period. Just adding relevant cool trailers for other Netflix content you are likely to love."

Indeed, the teasers have been for other Netflix original series, such as Marvel's Daredevil or the upcoming third season of Orange is the New Black. The teasers serve as the next wave of recommendations, and while they may be a bit intrusive, who isn't on the constant prowl for a new show to binge-watch once their current show's run comes to an end?

Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man

The LEGO Movie Directors Are Making an Animated Spider-Man Film

The big Sony Pictures leak fiasco that took place late last year revealed a lot of the studio's plans. One such plan involved negotiations between Sony and The LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller to direct an upcoming Spider-Man film. Since then, many things have changed, the most notable of which is Spider-Man officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in next year's Captain America: Civil War.

During a presentation at Las Vegas' Cinema Con, it was revealed that the 22 Jump Street writers/directors will be writing and producing an animated Spider-Man film. Furthermore, the film will be independent of the upcoming live-action Spider-Man film and will debut in theaters on July 20, 2018.

With Marvel's Kevin Feige already confirming that the live-action Spider-Man will be a high school-aged Peter Parker, the possibility of Miles Morales starring in the animated film is very realistic. It would help introduce Miles to a larger audience outside of comic book circles, and could be the stepping stone Sony and Marvel need to incorporate the character into the live-action MCU films.

Whatever the case, Lord and Miller have proven their penchant for comedy with The LEGO Movie, both Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs films, and the 21/22 Jump Street films. With the keys in the duo's hands, I'm feeling extra confident and excited for the animated Spider-Man film.

Vincent D'Onofrio in Marvel's Daredevil

Marvel's Daredevil Renewed for Second Season

Marvel's Daredevil has been an amazing success for both Marvel and Netflix. Reviews have been stellar since the entire first season was released on April 10th, further building to Marvel's ability to turn almost everything they touch to gold. With the precedent of quality set for the rest of the upcoming Netflix-exclusive series (Marvel's A.K.A. Jessica Jones is coming later this year while Marvel's Luke Cage is scheduled for 2016 and the other two series, Marvel's Iron Fist and Marvel's Defenders are slated for some indeterminate time in the future), it was only a matter of time before Marvel and Netflix announced a second season of Daredevil.

Sure enough, the second season of Marvel's Daredevil was officially greenlit yesterday. However, a few changes will be made for the hit series' continuation. Steven DeKnight, Season 1's showrunner that took over following Drew Goddard's exit during pre-production, won't be returning due to prior commitments. Instead, Doug Petrie (American Horror Story) and Marco Ramirez (Sons of Anarchy) will both serve as showrunner.

While we absolutely loved Marvel's Daredevil, there's still room for improvement. Hopefully, Petrie and Ramirez are able to recognize some of Season 1's shortcomings to ensure Season 2 will be just as good, if not better. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to re-watch the entire season... again.

Spike Lee

Spike Lee Asking for $3 Million Tax Break for Chiraq

Last week, Chicagoans found themselves divided over the announcement that Spike Lee will be directing a Chicago-set film, Chiraq. Myself and the rest of the Ruby Hornet team took a stand against the title, calling the name "misguided, demeaning, and insulting to Chicago." The director is in town for this weekend's CIMM Fest, and recently met with some city leaders to find funding and receive a tax break for the film.

Exactly how much of a tax break is Lee and his production team asking for? $3 million. Alderman Will Burns of the 4th Ward, who also helped structure the film industry tax break system for Illinois, responded to Lee's representatives' request, stating, "You recognize that by seeking public support that gives us a seat at the table." Burns is part of the very vocal group of opposition that finds the film title demeaning. He further states:

With the title Chiraq, that’s branding whole parts of the city. For people who live on the South and West Sides who pay their taxes, are active in block clubs and work to make their neighborhoods better, it’s a slap in the face [...] South Siders and West Siders already walk around with a massive chip on their shoulders. There’s a sense the media only comes to cover dead bodies and not the positive things that happen every day. And why is this guy from New York coming to do a movie about Chicago?

Recently re-elected Mayor Emanuel also met with Lee at City Hall yesterday, voicing his dislike of Chiraq as the film's title to the director. Mayor Emanuel also expressed his concern over the depiction of Englewood residents, where the film will be shot in and located. When asked what Emanuel said to Lee, the Mayor replied:

He said the movie is about the neighborhood of Englewood. I was clear that I was not happy about the title [...] I told him also that there are very good people who live in Englewood who are raising their family. There’s a lot of positive things happening in Englewood, mainly driven by the people that make up Englewood.

With a vocal opposition to the title from both everyday citizens and city leaders, it would only make sense for Lee to truly hear our concern and opinions over why the title should be changed. Lee's a smart man, and I'm sure he'll be open to changing the title from Chiraq once he sees exactly how passionate we are about our reasons... especially if he receives a state tax break to shoot the film here. As Alderman Burns says, "[...] the public should be given a seat at the table, and we need to have a conversation and a dialogue about it. It’s our money, and it’s our city."
