Google's Panorama App Photo Sphere Now Available on iOS
I really love Google's Street View. It allows you to walk around mapped cities and even explore certain interiors of buildings, creating a wholly immersive experience that, really, was only meant to help people get their bearings in new areas. For the past year, Android users had exclusive access to Google's photo app, "Photo Sphere," that allowed users to create interactive 360 panoramas of their locations that could be shared with other users over Google Maps. This week, iOS users can now share the experience as the year-long exclusivity period has expired.
As somebody who's had one iteration of the iPhone for more than four years, I can't wait to test this out. I think some very innovative and creative panoramic shots can be made that go beyond the normal panoramic photo. Google created a video last summer detailing how Photo Sphere works if you're still a bit confused about the new app. If you create any cool ones, send them our way so we could feature them in the near future!

Tumblr to Scan Photos For Brand Information
More than a year ago, Yahoo! bought Tumblr for an astounding $1.1b. At the time, I speculated the deal would mean more ads would be displayed on the dashboard, which has come to pass, although not to the level I thought it would approach. New Yahoo! CEO Marissa Meyer kept to her word on not messing with what made Tumblr so popular, which is invigorating in this age of tech business acquisitions and maneuvering. Starting this week, however, some behind-the-scenes changes are being implemented to help brands better understand Tumblr and its users... and it's not as bad as you may think.
Tumblr is signing a deal with Ditto, a tech company that has created a system that can scan photos for brand-related data and logos to send to said brands. As an example, I used a header from the Ditto website that shows exactly what happens: Ditto scans photos for logos, then sends the photos to the proper brand to show popularity and affiliations amongst a demographic of people. Tumblr head of business development T.R. Newcomb has said the deal has nothing to do with ad-related content, stating, "If Coke wants to understand the nature of the conversation [about them on Tumblr] Ditto can sift through and deliver it to Coke." However, this doesn't mean targeted ads won't be implemented in the future.
As somebody that has dabbled more in the tech/ad side of things for the past year, I think the system is really cool and innovative. Why shouldn't companies know how their brands are being represented? At the same time, it could come at the cost of privacy invasion for users simply sharing their content with friends. It's a bit of a slippery moral slope; what do you think?

[Weekend Box Office] The Expendables 3 Proven Expendable at Box Office
You can pack a film to the brim with action stars and explosions, but that doesn't always guarantee box office success, especially at a time when gun violence is at an extreme level of controversy. There's also the controversy that took place earlier in the summer where The Expendables 3 was leaked, in full, online. Piracy is a very real thing, and nobody, not even Sylvester Stallone, is immune to it. Whatever the real reason (or reasons) may be, the fact remains that The Expendables 3 flopped hard at the box office. With rumors that this was the final Expendables film anyways, looks like it's as good a time as any for Stallone and co. to hang up the rifles and berets.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles topped the box office for a second week in a row with Guardians of the Galaxy not far behind in second. The Damon Wayans, Jr. and Jake Johnson-led Let's Be Cops debuted at third with $17.7m above the aforementioned The Expendables 3's $16.2m, with the film adaptation of The Giver closing out the top five with a $12.7m debut.
You can check out the weekend's full box office numbers below.
1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - $28,400,000
2. Guardians of the Galaxy - $24,735,000
3. Let's Be Cops - $17,700,000
4. The Expendables 3 - $16,200,000
5. The Giver - $12,760,000
6. Into the Storm - $7,720,000
7. The Hundred-Foot Journey - $7,109,000
8. Lucy - $5,317,200
9. Step Up All In - $2,700,000
10. Boyhood - $2,150,319

46 Free e-Books for Photographers
Whether you're a seasoned veteran photographer or aspiring amateur photographer, it's never a bad idea to refresh your memory with some guide books. After all, bringing things back to the basics can sometimes prove to jump kick those creative juices at times when you might find yourself spent. I know I need a bit of warm-up time when I'm out shooting after months of inactivity.
The team over at Light Stalking have put together an astounding collection of 46 free e-books for photographers to use as references, guides, inspiration, and more. Some of the books are straight guides, like A Photographer's E-Guide to Making Sharp Photographs while others are made up of photo collections, like Urban Exploration Photography. There are even guides for aspiring Instagram photographers, like the aptly titled The Photographer's Guide to Instagram. I know I'll be taking some time out of my day to refresh my Photoshop and Lightroom skills with Adobe Photoshop vs. Adobe Lightroom.
Even if you have no interest in picking up a camera, I'm sure you'll find some amazing photo books in the collection. The first half of the e-books can be found here, while the rest can be found here.

[Video] Guardians of the Galaxy's Final Groot Scene (SPOILERS)
Note: This post contains Guardians of the Galaxy spoilers. Continue at your own risk.
Guardians of the Galaxy has been one of the biggest blockbusters of the summer, bringing in $176m in domestic revenue as of Sunday. Obviously, a lot of the film's success is thanks to Marvel's influence, the source material, and an entertaining cast and script. Arguably the film's best scene, however, takes place towards the end of the film. Again, if you've bypassed the title and my extra warning above this paragraph, you know what you're getting yourselves into.
Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) is a humanoid tree that can heal from any type of damage, so long as at least one sliver of his wood is saved. It's not explicably said in the film, but Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper) ensures Groot will be okay by saving a piece of him following the film's climactic battle. Just as the credits begin playing, there's a fun scene featuring Groot and Dave Bautista's Drax the Destroyer in which Groot dances to Michael Jackson's "I Want You Back." Very fitting, no?
In an ingenious marketing move, Disney and Marvel have released the scene as a standalone clip. All they need is to create mini-plotted Groot figures that react to sound or something to complete the move. Even more interesting is that the film's director, James Gunn, provided the motion reference for Groot's dance moves, as he states:
Baby Groot dancing is 100 percent me. I was too embarrassed for anyone to be there, so I made everyone leave the room and I set up a camera and I videotaped myself dancing. Then I sent the video to the animators and had them animate over that. I begged them not to leak the video!
Enjoy!

[Weekly Netflix Fix] Get Sexy with Nymphomaniac
The latest installment of new Netflix Instant titles includes Nymphomaniac, the Lars Von Trier two-part film following the sexual life of its main character, Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg). I've covered the film extensively, but never had the chance to actually watch it. Alex did, however, and gave it a respectable score. All I know is the next few days are going to involve nothing but watching Gainsbourg fall into sexy shenanigans. Also added this week is the amazing indie horror film, You're Next, and the sci-fi phenomenon Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, narrated by Neil deGrasse Tyson. You can find the full list below.

Don't Turn a Blind Eye to the Events in Ferguson, MO
I try to stay away from stuff like this on an "official" level. There's so much social unrest and lack of justice, to only comment on one event would be a disservice to the countless others that came before it (and will come after it). I've always seen it as my position to entertain, to share information and "cool shit" as a way to find a reason to smile in the face of events that would prevent us from doing so. However, this past weekend's events concerning Mike Brown have led to wards a level of disgusting police militarization and exploitation of power that I can't just stand back and not say something about it. The thing is, while your social network feeds may be full of updates coming from Ferguson, MO, there are still plenty of people in the country who simply aren't aware of what's happening thanks to a media blackout of coverage. I have a platform where I can reach people who may not be aware, so why not use it to spread awareness?
Last Saturday, a young man named Mike Brown was shot dead by a police officer in Ferguson, MO after putting his hands up to surrender. The details are still blurry as to what elevated the confrontation to that height, but the fact remains that an unarmed black man who was surrendering was shot dead by an officer. The fallout of the killing exploded, with no real justice being delivered by the people put in power to serve it. Even to this day, five days after the shooting, officials have refused to release the name of the officer who pulled the trigger, on-site witnesses have yet to be interviewed by the police department, and the complete lack of a proper investigation into the unfortunate end of this man's life has still not taken place.
As unfortunate as it is to say, the majority of you reading this come from Chicago, a city that knows its fair share of gun violence and police brutality. While not every murder and shooting receives national coverage, Chicago is still the third largest city in the country, and we will still receive our fair share of attention that a small town like Ferguson, MO never would have. Here's the discrepancy: Mike Brown's killing honestly would have gone unknown had it not been for independent entities like Al-Jazeera and Anonymous helping spread the news, but it took peaceful protest, peaceful demonstration to alert the country of the injustice he and his family have faced. Even then, as I pointed out earlier, there will still be many people who will go through their day still unaware of what's happened.
[youtube id="720_l3dgbYA"]
My point in writing this is two-fold. One, it's to bring general awareness to the events that have taken place in Ferguson, MO since the weekend. You may not consider yourself political, you may not feel comfortable getting involved with events that are so deeply rooted in racial tension, you may not even want to even focus on such negativity (and really, who can blame you?). However, what these police officers have shown to us transcends race, transcends politics, transcends basic human treatment, transcends our rights as Americans.
Two, it's to show that these police officers are exploiting their power and acting above the law. Journalists and members of the press have a right known as Freedom of the Press, and as such, we're given the right to share and communicate our information across outlets without interference from those in charge. Yet, as I watched live streams of last night's events, members of the media were being blacked out, being told to shut off their cameras. In the video a few paragraphs above, you can see a canister of tear gas shot at members of Al-Jazeera as they were setting up their equipment. We can't allow these attempts of covering up happen. We can't stand idle during this.
[iframe id="http://new.livestream.com/accounts/9035483/events/3271930/videos/59166942/player?width=960&height=540&autoPlay=false&mute=false"]
The preceding video is what put me over the edge. Shot on site of a protest in a Ferguson neighborhood, you can see demonstrators simply chanting. Yet, as the police approached closer and closer and as demonstrators held their ground, the police began to shoot tear gas and rubber bullets into the crowd, which you can see around the nine minute mark. As it dispersed, the police continued to draw closer, shooting into residential neighborhoods. I've taken part in protests over the years, but never have I been witness to such despicableness. The "official word" from the Ferguson police department is that shots were fired or protestors were throwing molotov cocktails, to which the police began shooting in response. I call bullshit.
We have to show our support. Whether it's a simple tweet, sharing videos, calling Missouri state officials, attending protests, whatever it is, we have to stand up against these atrocities and share awareness with those around us. Like I wrote earlier, I've always seen my position at Ruby Hornet as one to simply entertain, and I will continue to do so after this is published. Will I (or RH as a whole) cover real events in the future? I don't know. However, what I do know is that I couldn't just sit around and write about the release date of the new Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers release date or something so largely asinine while something of real substance was taking place around us.
If you live in a major city, peaceful protests are scheduled to take place today. Look below on the flyer for more information about them in your city.
