[Mixtape] Sir Michael Rocks & Pouya: "Gookin"

Sir Michael Rocks recently took his talents to South Beach, and I can't say I blame him as Winter has begun edging its way into my Midwestern life. While down in sunny Miami, he linked up with his neighbor, Pouya, for some fun and music which culminated in this one-off collaborative mixtape, Gookin' released today. For his part, Mikey Rocks has been a staple of Chicago hip-hop since coming out with Chuck Inglish as one half of The Cool Kids. Since then, he has come and gone from several situations, seeming to have trouble finding solid footing in the sudden rush of talent that has burst from Chicago lately. Perhaps the move south was a good thing, as we find Sir Michael hitting his groove on this project that is a hark back to the fun old times of The Cool Kids. Production on the six-song EP goes to Kodyak, Trill Spector, Eric Dingus, Raiden and DJ Smokey. In an interview with the Miami New Times last month he described the project's loose feel: "It's more on the fun side. As homies, 'Oh, you want to do a track? Yeah, let's do it.' And fucking laugh in the studio, bring some bitches through and just chill." Check it out for yourself here and pick it up for $2.99 at BandCamp.

Chuck Inglish: "Swervin'" (feat. Sir Michael Rocks)

The Cool Kids are back! Well, technically Mikey simply collaborated with Chuck Inglish on the latter's latest single from his forthcoming album Convertibles and both have stated multiple times that they each are focusing on their individual projects. Still, we'll take "Swervin'" as a win for the group's fans and this banger will surely hold us over for some time.

[Mixtape] Sir Michael Rocks: "While You Wait..."

After a few weeks of single drops, Sir Michael Rocks' While You Wait... is finally here in its entirety. The mixtape consists of 10 tracks full of features and production by Mac Miller, Ab-Soul, Dash, Cardo, and Polyester & Popular. Some standout tracks include the previously released In a Minute and the Cardo-produced "The Lobby." You can download Sir Michael Rocks' While You Wait... over at DatPiff and listen to the mixtape below.

Sir Michael Rocks: "In a Minute" (feat. Ab-Soul and Dash) (prod. by Larry Fisherman)

"In a Minute" is Sir Michael Rocks' new song in preparation for his next project, While You Wait... Featuring Ab-Soul and Dash with production by Larry Fisherman (AKA Mac Miller), "In a Minute" has a smooth, bass heavy beat with a stand-out verse by Ab-Soul. I'm a sucker for Sonic the Hedgehog references, and the MC begins his verse hitting the trifecta of Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails; how could I not be a fan of that?

You can check out "In a Minute" below.

[Closed Sessions] Sir Michael Rocks: "So Stupid" feat Vic Mensa (prod by DJ Babu)

When DJ Babu came out to Chicago last October to DJ at our "Natural High" release party, I knew we could set up a pretty ill Closed Session with some of Chicago's rising emcees.  Babu left it up to me, and I asked Sir Michael Rocks of The Cool Kids and Vic Mensa of Kids These Days to take part in a session with the Dilated Junkie.  Both were fans of Babu, and also wanted to work with each other, which they had previously never done.  What they created is "So Stupid", the latest drop from Closed Sessions Vol. 2, which drops in full tomorrow, August 30th.

The collaboration is multifaceted, with the various angles explored in the short documentary.  On one hand, you have DJ Babu trying to re-introduce himself to a new and younger audience.  You also have Sir Michael Rocks entering a new stage in his career after breaking out as part of The Cool Kids in 2008.  Lastly, there is Vic Mensa, who is just starting his ascent as part of Kids These Days.  They all intersect here.  Watch the new video and download "So Stupid" on the next page.
